Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) transmission getting hot

my transmission seems to be getting really hot when idleing in city traffic whether im rolling or at a stand still, today it got all the way to 250. however as soon as i get on the highway or the tc is locked up it cools way down to about 150. any ideas water temp is down at about 150.

If you are setting at a stop light... . I have usually drop my wifs truck into neutral. . If you are running in traffic that is under 30. . drop it into 2nd. Bill at DTT told us this would be the best way totreat it. .

right i will try that but what is actually causing this problem it never used to do this before.

Sometimes the obvious things to check slip by me, so maybe you have the same thing happen to you. Just wondering if you have checked the fluid level? Have there been any services done lately like fluid, filter, and adjustments made? Only other thing I can think of presently is to perhaps call the company that made your aftermarket kits and ask if they can help determine the problem. Good luck sorting it out.

I believe there is a check valve in the fluid line where it enteres the heat exchanger located on the passenger side of the engine. I don't know if there has been an issue with them but DTT removed mine and replaced it with a braided line when we replaced my transmission.

what is your truck idling at in drive

thanks for the replies the line to the heat exchanger was replaced with a braided one now a few months ago i drove with the heat exchanger bypassed for about a week until i got the braided lines. the fluid is good, and it does not matter if the ac is on or off. if i flip the switch and lock up the TC the temp comes down pretty quickly i am thinking maybe the heat exchanger got damaged some how i dunno

The only time my trans temp climbs is in stop and go traffic. The flow of fluid in the system is lowest at idle. The amount of flow is controlled by throttle position in the 47re and leaks internally in most of these transmissions can make things worse. I lock out overdrive in city driving and put trans in neutral at long lights. I was surprised by this when I first installed the trans temp gauge, more surprised, that even while towing, the trans temp stays at 180 or lower while moving.
