My friend has an 06 Dodge 2500 48RE with 42,000 miles. He has a hard time getting it in 4 lo. When he tried putting it in 4 lo sitting still it would not go in so he tried coasting ahead and it went in. Also sometimes when he's cruising along in Drive it will just pop into neutral. His son had about the same problem with his truck and it was a loose transmission. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean by "loose transmission" Do you mean it is slipping? or is it physically loose at the bell housing?

I find the best way to get the truck into 4low is as the truck is shutting down, slide the t-case into 4 low. OF course make sure that truck itself is in neutral when you do this.

The owners manual specifically states that 4LO is easier to engage if you are rolling very slowly. This is how I normally engage 4LO, and I've never had a problem engaging it. Automatic must be in neutral. Manuals in neutral and clutch depressed.

There was discussion about transmissions popping into neutral, but I can't find the thread now...

I just told my friend what you said and it turns out I misunderstood him. When he tries to put it in 4LO, he coasts ahead then hits his brakes and it will go in. Seems like something loose in either the transmission or transfer case.

He needs the transmission in neutral and be rolling very slowly ( 1-2 mph ). It sounds like he is moving too fast or is still in gear. He may not be getting the transfer case fully in gear. I had a 05 and had to go to 4 low about once a week, never had a problem. I have experienced if you are under a load and tried shifting into 4 high, you could be only getting in gear partially, and that would let it pop out of gear.
