No shifts a WOT *Help*

about a month and a half ago my transmission gave out on my "06" 5. 9 quad cab. just completely died when i went to get on the freeway. no forward no reverse, no 4wd. after having it towed to the dealer i was told the TC was shot and misc. other parts and pieces. it ran pretty well for about a month and then it started the shift hunt btwn 2nd and 3rd and slipping into neutral for longer periods than is normal. i took it back in and had the mechanic ride with me and he agreed that there were some shifting issues and that he could fix that no problem. left it there again to have him load a new program from dodge that should alleviate the problem. well it did seem a bit better so i drove it for a couple of more weeks and it just got worse and worse. my wife barely made it to the dealer to get it checked again and i am informed the TC is gone again and it needs a new sealring kit and about $800. 00 worth of misc parts and plates. i'm sure there are other things the service advisor informed me of, but when he said he couldn't get the parts for two weeks i was so mad i couldn't think. dodge won't replace it either.

i've had the truck since the end of "06" and in that time have towed my toyhauler on three long trips. once to the Oregon coast, once to San Diego (campland by the bay) and once to Parker Arizona. only the trip to Parker was i loaded with my ATV's. it's a 26ft Attitude which is a pretty lite rig and a 3500 should have no issues pulling that as that is what i bought it for. how does a transmission go out twice in a month and a half with less than 30K on it. i am not a hot rodder. i have a AFE Stage II intake and an AFE intake horn i bought from Mr. Bob at the May Madness, a Pac Brake exhaust brake, and Air Ride air bags.

i am regretting that i bought an automatic. it looks like even though i am covered under warranty and they are going to fix it AGAIN, that this transmission is just not going to hold up for the long haul. since they won't replace the transmission is there some way for me to ensure they are going to get this next repair right and what can i reasonably expect from this trans as far as useful life? as they charged me $800. 00 for my 15K service they cannot say i didn't follow maintenance schedules. can someone give me a detailed list of what i should ask the service advisor about what should be performed and how can i determine the parts were actually changed with new ones? will this trans ever really be right or is that possible after going out twice? could this have been caused by them not performing the correct maintenance procedures and maybe not flushing the fluids properly?

I'm surprised they did not barf on the exhaust brake being there... but it's an o6...

My dealer was squeamish of my aftermarket alarm system.

Sorry you're having trouble.

Part of the problem is you simply do not know the competency level of the tech who is building the trans and replacing parts. If they don't do it correctly and understand the problem areasthey will consistently turn out substandard work that is a failure waiting to happen.

FWIW, there have been a few 06's found with internal cracks that impossible to find and will eventually cause a trans failure. The harder you push it the faster it fails. Dealers will refuse ot acknowledge this nor do they want to out source the trans build most of the time. If its under warranty you may just be stuck with what you get.

What can you do? Take it to reputable builder after they are done and have it checked out on your dime and the problems fixed. That way at least you have a reliable trans and not have to deal with the dealer. To a lot of us, its worth the cost. Good luck. :)

what do you mean internal cracks? do you mean the TC or the valve body or the seal ring housing or what?? also why would the exhaust brake affect the transmission codes? the new 6. 7's come with an exhaust brake option. is there maybe a code upgrade that would compensate for the Pac Brake on my "06" 5. 9?

also how can they justify replacing 2 torque converters, a valve body and other misc. parts in less than a month and a half and say it's not 70% of the cost of a new transmisssion? a new valve body is 1K by itself.

The cracks are suspected to be internal to the casing casting. They tend to cause issues when used hard and/or all the trans pieces are not close on tolerances.

Pac Brake is not the authorized EB and the newer turbo's are a different animal with different issues. Not a real good comparison.

Warranty work is bugaboo at this time. If they can't fix it it really is your problem and that does bite. :{

I can not help you with the Transmission problem. As far as the dealer, where are you having the work done? I had an injector replaced at the Dodge dealership at 215 and Rainbow, they seemed to know what they were doing. That was 2 was ago things could have changed there.

The trans on my '06 had a slippy feeling at 35,000 miles so I drove it to Goerend to have it beefed up. WOW, what a difference! Turns out my torque converter was shot due to an improper stamping of the shell, so Dave installed a new tc, valve body and other things. My point is, even though it was under warranty, if I took it to Dodge, they would have replaced it with their stock stuff. I have no regrets paying for a trans that has a huge warranty and drives like a completely different truck! If I had to buy another truck, I would drive it straight to him and have him do the same thing right off the bat! Warrantys are nice, but not always the best.
