68rfe problem

P2196 and severe cold operation question

Truck has 45,000 miles. Pristine condition. No towing, basically my Sunday truck. Tow my boat in Summer occasionally , 6,000 lbs. I drove the truck today on a 50 mile trip,no issues. When I got in the truck to return home, I went out and started the truck to let it warm up, 40 degrees outside. Let it sit there idling about 15 min. Then I put in reverse to back up and it was as I hadn't put in gear. I thought I had went to neutral. Had to get on throttle to get it to move. Finally started backing up but felt rough. Then went to drive and could not feel it go in to gear again. Had to give extra throttle again. Then engine light come on. Got on highway and it never shifted into overdrive. Indicator was showing 4th all way home. Tried to pull off from red light and it don't feel good! When I got home, pulled into garage, got out with truck still running and I can hear a slight rattle coming from transmission. I also hooked up my smarty to see what code and it shows, transmission control systems or something like that. I just did a transmission service on it about 3500 miles ago. I am scared this thing is gone and I know it will be big bucks to fix! Advice needed desperately ! Thanks in advance.

Have a friend with a 2010 with same symptoms. His threw these codes today, P0944, P0868 andP0841. Can anyone help identify these. I am searching for a list now, have seen discussion on these before but I have never had any problems myself and never had to find any. I know they have been some printed in the magazines too. Hope it is something simple for both of you.

I don't have much experiance with autos but Dodge has mostly required the fill level be checked in neutral, not park. If you did not do this it might be low on fluid.

Has your friend got any info on his yet? I thought some of the transmission gurus would come and chime in with some advice? Anybody out there that can help?

when I did the service 3500 miles ago , I measured the exact amount I drained, and replaced with same amount, then checked in neutral, added just a tad, and it was dead on. Level is fine. Had the same thought.

Did not talk to him today. I searched the site and looked in the buyers guide for codes and found none of these listed. I am stumped now. I am thinking that I am glad I have a 3rd Gen 5. 9 and a 48re trans. I think I will take some of Harvey's advice and leave the motor and drivetrain alone. I am hoping someone can help us out.

I'm surprised one of our transmission builders or dealership mechanics who is familiar with the newer six speed automatics has not posted in this thread.

I assume you replaced the ATF with an approved brand of synthetic and replaced the filter with a MOPAR filter?

Edit: I reread your original post and see a magic black box in your signature as well as the deletes. I know essentially nothing about the magic black boxes and what they are capable of but the fact of it being there makes me wonder is you have run it on a maximum setting and put your foot in it?

I have read reports that the MOPAR 6 speed automatic is fine when unmolested but somewhat fragile if power is turned up.

as far as my filters, ordered from Genos. Mopar ATF+4. And as far as black box, been on economy tune from day one. Truck has not been hot rodded at all. I am 52 years old and have literally babied this thing. Besides, I only did my deletes 8500 miles ago.

Did one of the filters come loose? Only way to check is to drop the trans pan but if the trans was fine then you did the service and now a few thousand later its not working I would look at the filters first. The spin on filter has an issue with the plastic nipple breaking if the filter is over tightened and there are issues with the seal if its not installed correctly. The seal is hard to see up in the trans it may not have sealed on the case well and could be leaking.

Based on this info I'd say you're unlikely to have a transmission failure. I think I would follow Franzese's advice and either replace or inspect the filter integrity. That sounds like a mistake that's easy to make and cheap to rectify. Hopefully that's your problem.

That was one old the first things that entered my mind when this happened. What would the rattle be coming from transmission though? The sump filter dropped down?

Ok, I just dropped pan and the filters are perfect. Nothing come loose or anything. But I do have metal shavings in pan. Don't know what to do? Isn't there some transmission experts on here that could advise me on my next step?

Did you get a good look at the plastic threaded piece in the spin on filter? I have seen these cracked and cause air to enter the system... I usually install the ATS billet threaded piece into the trans during service as an upgrade. I know... its one of the few pieces they make that i will use.

Metal shavings are never good. Based on that and your other problems, looking for a transmissin rebuilder would be your best bet. Sounds like something has failed internally.

Ok, got an update. Had it towed to a recommended transmission shop. They put their scan tool on and I have these codes, p- 0868, p-0944, p-0731, and p-0841. What their belief is at this point is the torque converter failed and come apart, and caused all the other stuff to happen. Won't know until they pull it and open up to see what all is damaged. They can't pull until Friday. I am not a happy camper at this point! This truck is not worked or anything. As stated in my first post, this is my Sunday truck. This thing doesn't even know what a load is! I know anything mechanical can fail, but I am very disappointed with this report and what has happened. This is gonna cost big bucks for a truck I paid big bucks for! I will update when it's pulled out and know more.

I know that H&S had a TCC program to aid in the added power and Smarty doesnt. Wonder if others with Smarty have had early failures with their TC? Unfortunetly, TC is a major player in the 68rfe failures...

If I had run it hard with the performance tune or something like that, I would have a concern about it,but it has been on economy since day one. And also deletes have only been done 8500 miles ago. Would that matter?

It's hit and miss with the 68rfe when come to straining it with extra TQ. Sounds like you smoked your 5th and 6th gear clutch's. That's why it won't shift past 4th gear.

At this point you might as well pony up for a new transmission. Look at Revmax if you go that route. Partial rebuild are out of the question with the 68, unlike the 47/48re.
