transmission hose burst, need advice...

On the freeway my trans hose that goes under the bellhousing sprung a big leak, truck would not move after in got into a storefront parking lot. Had it towed home. I have not touched it yet, (I had to continue with my commitments). Frame looks pretty well bathed in trans fluid. What type of hose to use? Whats the best way to clean frame/diff, should I worry about fluid in the rear brake drums? Tail gate cleaning? The under the bed trans cooler fan came on just before I shut down, ran for about 30 seconds. There is still some fluid left in the trans. Do you think I damaged my trans? Thanks any of you who have had this experience, and I greatly appreciate any and all advice!

Oh, I knew there was a small leak, but I figured I would wait until it began dripping:#@$%!=stupid. I hope this is a lesson to any other procrastinators in the house.

Most good parts stores will have transmisssion hose it will usually be labelled as such on the hose. I'd get the hose replaced and fill her up with fluid and keep my fingers crossed, if there is still some fluid left you are probably ok.

For hose and good hydraulic line will work or AC line



For the frame go to your local blow and go car wash and blow it off

if wanted buy a spray bottel of Simple green and spray off areas first



Try type F transmission fluid or simular fluid

fix the hose and then go drive on a dusty dirt road. . and viola youv'e winterproofed the undercarriage. .

Transmission is probably alright. A big leak will shut it down before it has a chance to overheat. What kills them is a slow leak that you don't notice which lets it slip for a while before it quits.

If there is a shop nearby that makes hydraulic hoses, taht would be a good source also. I'd go with ATF III or IV. Hard to find the III anymore. When you do start up, make sure it is in neutral, as the fluid doesn't circulate through the hoses in Park.

if the cooling lines are the same as my 91, you're going to need half inch hose, not something most parts houses carry. you'd probably have more luck at places that specifically deal in hoses. i can go look at the specifics on the hose i used for my under bed cooler if you need it.

TDR: The Best!

Thank all of you for your wisdom, and humor:-laf. I DODGEd the bullet. What I found was a hose that was put on one of the lines, (between bellhousing, and on the pan side), had been cut, a hose about 7. 5" was the connection with hose clamps on either side. Why would someone cut this line? She took 10. 5-quarts, and it's just a little overfilled. Runs fine, shift points, o/d on/off work, cruise works as before. I did a quick clean/self car wash, and will get more detail after using degreaser. I used 2. 5-quarts of ATF-3, (coventinal?) and 8-quarts of ATF-4 synthetic. Will these oils mix okay Or am I asking for trouble. TDR ROCKSOo.

Possibly an inline temp sender. . You might want to check the hoses that go to the front cooler on the drivers side of the radiator as well as the ones going to your under bed cooler. there's a tsb out there somewhere saying something to the extent of its fine to put atf-4 in anything that takes atf 1, 2 or 3 just don't put a lower grade into something new that specifically calls for 4. so not really a problem for any of us.

Patrick, I had one of those aftermarket underbed coolers. The hose was routed between the fuel tank and the frame. Over time, it chaffed and I got a pin hole on a road trip. If it hadn't been summertime and me hearing a strange hissing sound. It's a wonder I could even hear that. But I looked in the side mirror and saw a trail following me. Pulled over and bypassed the cooler and hooked the hose back to itself. I only had to add a bit a fluid and got home ok.

Biggest complaint I have about a Cummins is that by the time I hear something out of the ordinary, it's REALLY out of the ordinary!!
