Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Transmission Hunting in and out of overdrive

When traveling at speeds below 40 mph, transmission overdrive come on and off several times until speed is increased. Anyone experience this before?

I had the same symptoms. My solution was to reset the APPS. If you search the forums you'll find all the info you need. It's very easy to do.

Typically resetting the APPS was only a temporary fix for the 99 in the family. Give Bill Kondalay a call at DTT 1-866-504-4002. He has a noise filter that will fix the majority of the cases. There is electrical noise interference in the wiring from the ECM and this causes the transmission to hunt. You can also clean all of the grounds on the vehicle. This takes a while but can help with the 'electrical noise'. Put the noise filter ($40) on the 99 and we haven't had any problems since the install. Two wires to hook up and stick it to the firewall and you are done. Very easy.

It sounds like what mine does. My shift pattern is 1/2/3/lockup/OD lockup and after 3rd lockup and before OD @ around 40 to 45 mph, I get an OD shift attempt. Final OD comes in at around 47 to 50 mph. This is only under light throttle and not when jumping on it. Since I live only a few miles from DTT in Abbotsford, I talked to Bill Kondolay about it. He assured me that it was normal, that it was typical of this transmission and not to worry. I still don't like it so I usually drive with OD off untill I reach around 50 mph.

So after a hunting trip with lots of low speed idiling my transmission started hunting between 1-2, and 2-3 with light throttle. I reset the APPS and had no change, would the filter be my ticket?

I'll second the "normal" vote. At 40 mph, the conditions are just barely right for a proper OD shift. I, too, lock it out if I'm hanging out in 40 mph speed zones. If it were doing it with a steady pedal, then maybe something is wrong. Most OD transmissions have this condition at some speed or another.

I had third gear lockup hunting and APPS reset helped for a while. Now with full DTT which included the filter, NO MORE HUNTING. Oo.

There is a difference between TC locking and unlocking which is usually noise related, and OD shift attempt. The TC locking and unlocking has been well documented and many have had success with filters and/or reseting the APPS. However, what I think "bstrand" is referring to is OD kicking on and off. At 40 to 45 mph, you are at the threshold of OD shift and you will get hinting of OD (feel a kick and rpm's will drop a couple hundred and quickly recover back to 3 lockup) until a slightly higher speed of say 45 to 50 mph satisfies the PCM. It is more evident with people that drive a lot in this speed band. I'm afraid a filter will have no effect as this is not a noise related issue. I learned to drive around it using my OD switch.
