Transmission in-line filter

I have just re-joined TDR after several years on the sidelines and recently bought a new 2007 3500 DRW 6. 7. My question is: have any of you installed an in-line filter on your new 68RFE 6 speed auto? I don't have a clue why they did not include a spin-on filter on the housing, but it seems an in-line filter would be a good idea. Comments?

I own an F550 with a ZF 6 speed (stick) that runs the transmission fluid through a cooler and filter... . we thought so much of it that we've installed the same type of filter on each of our other auto's... ..... a 91 or something 7. 3L F350... .

I've got a 08 5500 with auto on order..... we'll do the same to it upon arrival to keep the oil clean, add a qt so it will run a little cooler... . etc.

Are you trying to say that Dodge did not put a spin on filter on this brand new transmission?? and are still going with the "pan filter" ?? Probably didn't put a drain in the pan either?? welll, I guess we can always wait another 30 years for the next generation of transmission's

Its got one, but you gotta take the pan off to get to it. And another thing, there's no more pan gasket. You have to use special ATF-compatible RTV silicone when you put the pan back on the trans. It sucks. Stupid things like that are making me like the '08 SuperDuty more and more...

ATF-compatible RTV silicone, that's a contradiction in terms. So when it flakes off and makes it to the VB this new RTV will not stick a spool valve. I have my doubts

It also says in the owners manual and on the end of the dipstick that you need a special kind of ATF. I called the dealer to get some and they didn't know a thing about it. They said to just use ATF+4. This was on a C&C. Don't mean to hijack the thread.

Yeah they have a special RTV with its own part number just for use on automatics. I have my doubts too...

I wouldn't ever put an inline filter on!

My buddy has an '01 F550 with an auto. He pulls 10k regularly. At 38k, the transmission cooked. (2k out of warranty) He put in a factory reman. They also installed an inline filter, before any coolers. (I didn't know what it was. ) He was having problems with the converter seal puking oil out, a common problem on those trucks. I went on the powerstroke website to get info. That's where I found out it was a filter, factory reman required it, blah blah. I was at his house when he pulled in, truck spewing oil in a stream. When it cooled down, I decided to pull the filter. Guess what? It was plugged almost solid! I put the line back on, and he ran the truck for 2 weeks without major leaks. We knew the trans was fried at that point, so he got it rebuilt shortly there after. Then I added a fan cooler from Summit and a temp gauge. No problems since.



Maybe- if you added a pressure gauge to tell if it plugged?

Actually, I used Permatex "Right Stuff" on my wifes trans pan after I installed a Trans-go shift kit in her Liberty CRD.



That stuff works great and you can use the vehicle as soon as you tighten the pan down...



It is a bit off a pain to clean, but I used a air palm drill with a soft wire wheel. The I cleaned the whole pan with brake clean...



I do like this method better then the gaskets I have worked with in the past. No leaks the first time...

Did they al least put a drain in the pan of the 67RFE, or do you still have to take a oilbath everytime you change the filter?? Any reason besides the filter to go in the pan?, are there still bands to adjust??

in issue 58 on page 46, they talk about a spin on inline filter on the 68re. if there is one on my truck, i sure would like to know where. any ideas on this. g lachner 07. 5 quad cab 4x4
