Hi everyone maby someone can help me with some transmission problems, I have the noturious (spelling) NV4500 5-speed and when I shift into 5th gear it makes an audible rattiling sound, something that sounds like something is loose. My question is, is this the early signs of the fifth gear nut coming loose? If so what needs to be done to correct this problem, I was planning on replacing the clutch soon anyway so maby wwhen I have the transmission out I can fix it if its not too much of a project. I've heard of guys tack welding the nut, or else replacing the shaft but I dont know whats involved in replacing the shaft that gear and nut are on. Oh by the way as of right now I still have fifth gear but I got 164,000 miles on the clock.

Mine went out at about 200,000 miles. I just put the replacement nut from the DC dealer. Not to bad to do without removing the transmission. 4x4 makes it a bit more difficult, and the crossmember is a real sucker to get back in. So far it's held fine.

If you're going to have it out already, it's a snap. Just remove thre rear cap on the transmission exposing 5th gear. Replace the nut (as long as the shaft's not scared up or damaged. )

Keypoints:

1. ) Make sure the shaft is good and clean when you put the nut back on so loctite works properly

2. ) Use a torque wrench, especially on the set scres for the new nut. If they're over torqued the break. Trust me.

fifth gear should fit back on the shaft snuggly. If it's loose the shaft should be changed. That job is obviously bigger. It takes a special wrench for the 5th gear nut. I recommend getting one. Quad4x4.com has them.

Simply replacing/updating the nut is fine if there is no excessive gear/spline wear. People that don't want to drop the transmission tend to go that route.

But if you're going to drop it anyway, you might as well upgrade while you're at it. You can buy a barebones kit from Quad 4x4 if money is tight. If you can spare some change, get the big kit. Then you can replace all the bearings and synchro rings while you're at it.

Do NOT weld the nut on. You aren't stranded in the boondocks with no alternative so skip that option.

The only problem I had with my transmission was that it would slip out of fifth during a coast condition (and a finicky third gear synchro). I ended up toasting my clutch, so I took a

peek in the trans. The fifth gear, fifth countershaft gear, fifth gear clutch hub, mainshaft, and countershaft were bad!

I bought the big daddy kit. It came with everything you need including tools. And I bought some extra stuff too. Dan is a good guy.

You should throw a wrenching party. Some people can be bribed with beer or food. . ;)
