1998 Dodge Ram 3500, 16v, autotransmission, mileage 40,349. Recently purchased from a person I have known for 13 years and who operates a lot of diesel vehicles in his fleet. This was he and his wifes personally ordered, loaded vehicle which they used to pull their 5th wheel. They tired of 5th wheeling very early and sold the 5th and I bought the dually. Drove it from Florida to the North Georgia Mts. (400 miles and 17. 6 mpg. ) Was extremely pleased with the diesel mileage pulling a 15ft. boat at 70 mph with cruise control activated. Loved the fact that the cruise control was constant, no up and downs at all. Had all the power I needed an more. Couldn't tell the boat was even attached to the dually.
PROBLEM?
After arriving on the Ga. /Tenn/NC border in the Mountains and leaving the boat at the house, I drove to town. Notice that when not in Cruise Control that I was "free wheeling at a rapid speed". As I would go down a slope the diesel was so low in rpm's that it didn't even sound like it was running. But when I would go to apply the fuel to it... . the engine would increase in rpm's... . but the transmission was not engaging for a long time. I thought that I had knocked it out of gear. Checked to see if still in gear and it was. Then finally the transmission caught up with the rpms and engaged. This repeated itself on every up and down slope which makes me concerned that I have a transmission difficulty. I am totally not mechanically inclined. But if I were quessing I would say that it apparently has something to do with the torque convertor. This truck has so few miles on it that it should still be in the showroom.
