well, i changed the o-ring seal on the trans dip stick tube. pulled the tube out and fluid went everywhere. cleaned it up. drove it for a day and checked it again. still a drop on the bottom of the pan. so i checked the lines again, and still could only assume that it was the gasket. i dropped the pan (my first time). what a freakin' mess. i even had one of those change pans. the designer of those things apparently has never dropped the pan on a 96 dodge before. i had purchased a gasket kit from napa. what a p. o. s. . i did not realize this until i had my stock gasket in my hand and looked at the neoprene thing i bought from napa. i can tell you to get your trans pans from the dealer. they are rigid and have steel sleeves for the bolt holes. nice. well it's sunday and i decide to go ahead and put on the napa filter. the dodge filter looks better too. i put it back together and add fluid. still not happy with not having a new dodge gasket and filter on there. i will watch it for a few days. then back to the dealer for a new gasket and filter and will start all over again. i am in florida so i should be able to find one of those baby pools to stick under there next time. any encouragement/thoughts on where the leak could be would be appreciated. thanks. scott.

I only use a dealer gasket and filter, $22 for both. When draining leave a couple of bolts in loosely then pry the opposite side with a long screwdriver so your arm is out of the way, the oil will be directed a little better. Check that the pan has no dents or warps around the bolt holes from over torqueing and do use a torque wrench when tightening the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Don't remember the exact torque, but it isn't much, 10 ft/lbs or so. Over tightening is the main cause of pan leaks.

Scott,

Don't be too upset about the NAPA fitler and gasket. IMO the filters look to be excatly the same. If they are not the same they are very close (at least NAPA ones I have purchased are). As far as the gasket. I too like the OEM gasket, but the "rubber" gasket from NAPA should hold up for you for a little while no problem.

Nothing is ever simple, huh :)

i just changed my transmission fluid. i used a hand siphon pump to get out about 6 qts. then dropped the pan. unfortunately mine now has a small leak around the new gasket. it was a oem gasket so i assume the pan must have a warp in it somewhere. i torqued to 17N*m or about 12. 6 ft. lbs according to the manual. i am going to take the pan back off this weekend weather permitting and try again with a close look at the pan to check for any warpage. cya
