What would limp mode amount to on a 96? I've been having trouble with the transmission not coming back to low gear after hard runs/ high rpm and a friend suggested it might be limp mode?

If it won't drop back into 1st at stops usually then the gov pressure solenoid and switch is starting to go out. It's usually a couple hundred bucks at a shop to have this fixed and is a pretty common problem. You can change then yourself if you can get the parts... . they are on the bottom of the VB.

You may need to check the hydraulic pressure in the transmission. You can add resistors in the sensor line to allow high pressure.

Well, the Gov press. solenoid and sensor were the first suspects. The only reason I haven't persued them is the fact that it doesn't do this on a regular basis, only after a hard run.
