How involved is the removal of the check valve in the tranmission line leading into the water/oil heat exchanger?? What is the downside to taking this valve out?

Any special precautions or difficulties to this job?

Any help will be appreciated. This is a 99 3500.

Thans,

i knocked the check valve out with a long thin flat blade screwdriver and the spring also. only did this because i added the hot transmission line from a 95. my 01 had the check valve already some where already. i was told that you cant run two of these at the same time.

George25, If you notice i have the same vehicle you do. I just filed the end down very gently until the ball and spring popped out..... Everything works good... ..... Are you replacing the line that connects to it for some reason? I replaced the line that goes to it with one that had the transmission temp sensor port built into it and a check valve. That is why i removed the one in the fitting on the bottom of the cooler. Hope this helps and if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

The check valve in your truck is in the rear fitting in the heat exchanger. Remove the line that runs from front of trans to rear of exchanger, remove fitting from exchanger, push on side of little sheet metal retainer in fitting to cock it, catch edge with little screwdriver, pry it out, spring and ball will fall out, reinstall fitting and line. You will lose some fluid doing this so be prepared. The side effect could be some converter drainback overnight, the plus side is less restricted cooler flow. If you don't have a modified valvebody that fills the converter in park, then just start truck and let run in neutral for 30 seconds to a minute before trying to drive away and you'll not notice the drainback. The benefits outweigh the side effects. I have seen these balls stick and cause melt down of a trans. My. 02. HTH
