Hello fellow members, I have a 99 CTD 4x4 with DTT transmission. I have a puddle under the front pumpkin, has the look of Amsoil synthetic fluid, which I run. Seems to maybe be leaking where the cooler lines (?) come between the cross member and engine. Cannot tell for sure. How much do these lines cost, where do I get them, and should I put them on or let a knuckle-buster do it.
 
Its easy to cut the lines a few inches back from the cooler connections under the radiator. Find the correct size plumbing style compression fitting and have a local hydraulic hose shop make you up some replacement hoses. I had to remove the coolant/trans fluid cooler on the pass side of the motor to install my twins. This is how I got rid of the fixed lines.

I will tell you that a friend of mine, Leon, helped save me some grief here as he told me that the lines on his 94 had been rubbing together and had rubbed a hole in his lines. He reccomended installing some hoses between cooling lines. I did so in I think a couple of places. The lines had been rubbing together for sure. I also installed a couple of hose clamps on each side of the cheap connectors that hold the lines together and used tie wire twisted like you do so in holes in bolts to secure them together. My brother gave me a extra tool that twist the wire, he is a aircraft mechanic . I have not had any problem with the connectors coming apart. Just an idea. Jim
 
Thanks for all the help. This morning pickup had hemmoraged all over the carport floor. I called dealer, he only had one line in stock, of course it was the wrong one. Another dealer told me that Dodge had re-designed the lines and that I would have to replace all lines and fittings. How much, I asked. Just $325 !!! I told them I would think about it. Took old line off, took it to a good welder, he patched the hole, then I encased both lines in heater hose and clamps. Hope this works.

I sure as ... . not going to pay 325 dollors for the lines as I think that should have recalled the poor designed lines. Anyway besure to check all of the places where metal lines are run together. Along the side of the engine and by the pan. I have gathered enough ss tubing that I could build the lines but lost interest. I have thought about removing the check in the cooling lines also and I may do so as that is some thing that would be hard to see untill it is to late, not like a leak. Just an idea lol Jim

Sounds like a good fix. Not sure which one had the hole in it, but if someday you do end up having to replace the line from transmission to the oil cooler, then you might want to think about getting the stock line from a 95 instead of the stock 99 line. The line from the 95 has a nice tap for your trans temp sender built into it. Not cheap though - $110 I think I remember.

Steve, glad to see you got your problem straightened out. I agree that the factory lines are overpriced, however they do fit nice and don't leak unless damaged. When replacing early style lines I use the OE lines with the '95 front line as mentioned above. Let me know if I can ship you any Amsoil.

You were lucky it happened at home and didn't leave you stranded.

I just had to go to Iowa(nearly to ILL. ) to haul back a customer that had a hole rubbed in one of their lines near the harmonic balancer and the trans bled to death. It was a two thousand mile plus road call!:--)

I can tell you one thing...



the trans. cooler lines WILL rub through at the front of the engine mount crossmember where the lines pass over, angling downward at the leading edge. I noticed this engineering and/or installation oversight and corrected it with a couple of carefully placed rubber protective sleeves (i. e. , rubber fuel or vacuum hose split lengthwise).
