My 96 TD will not go in cold weather. The transmission has to warm up first. I have heard this problem called "Morning Sickness. " What causes this problem and how is the problem fixed? Thanks for any help! Bob
 
temperature plays a role and also the fact that the transmission fluid drains from the TC. An aftermarket TC will fix that ;)

Otherwise we'll have to live with it I guess :-laf
 
If your transmission is stock, they don't flow much oil at all in Park. That is why you have to put the truck in neutral to check the fliud level. Most likely, the torque convertor drained back from sitting overnight. When you start the truck, leave in neutral for a bit, and then put it into gear. See if that solves the problem.



I used to have to do the same thing with my stock transmission.

that's what works somewhat, since the temperatures have dropped considerably the last few days in West Texas :-laf
 
The stock transmission drains fluid back. Does that mean that the TC seals are shot? Does this situation affect the truck's pulling a load?

It means the front pump bushing is getting loose. Don't worry about it. If you start the Cummins and let it idle in neutral for 30 seconds, will it go then? If so it is the bushing ( or air entering the system somehow) . It will be fine to drive it.



You can buy an aftermarket Valve body to get it to oil in park. Or modify the stock VB to oil in park.

This is all normal to dodge auto's even way back into the 60's.
 
I have complete suncoast transmissions in both of my 12v trucks. They often have "morning sickness". One transmission is only 3 months old. Is this something I should have Suncoast check?

I believe I would get both suncoast transmissions checked out, particularly if still under warranty. My 12v truck has been doing this for about 3 years and has gotten progressivly worse over the years. Our lowest temperature has been around 14 degrees and the colder it is the longer it take to warm up and go. The sensation is like the truck will move about 45 feet then the transmission just quits pulling.
 
I do not know if yours is the same , but mine has a temp senor in the trans line , and when I put a tee in it for a gauge sensor , it took it out of the flow enough that now it will not use 4th & OD until its been runnig for about 5min , I did not have the problum until the cooler weather showed .
 
I've had a DTT for years now. I was taught by Fred Swanson to always start it in neutral thus getting the fluid going from the get go. Only on the coldest mornings do I experience the "dead zone"
 
i agree with baja bob i do the same with my dtt on the first start of the day i put it in neutral before i crank it and let it sit for about 10-15 seconds, i do this even though i have never had the morning sickness problem.
 
When was the last fluid filter change, and what is the condition of the fluid now?

Let me ask you to try an experiment. Change the fluid and filter again. Now substitute3 or 4 quarts of atf with 3-4 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil. I bet it really helps the morning sickness. Hopefully your truck doesn't have more wrong with it.

Something isn't right. My Georend transmission has yet to have "morning sickness". :D The stocker had it bad in the winter.
