Just went for a good 600 mile drive and I noticed that progressively (or i was listening closer) that there is a noise coming from the transmission area. It sounds like a bearing. when coasting you don't hear anything out of the norm but when you get into the throttle at 60+ mph it starts getting very noisy. The stick doesn't feel any dif. no noise at coast or with the clutch in and reving the engine. I purchased this truck used from the dealer, sort of know the previous owner (no abuse), I havn't checked the fliud yet, but no leaks. Lord don't tell me this thing is gonna need a rebiuld with only 55k miles on it and I've only put 15 of those on 95% empty. Can't any one build a truck that lasts!had a chev that needed 3 input bearings. I have alot more driving to do as we speak please help.

Wish I could help but I will be watching for replies. I think my '99 has the same noise. Sounds like it's in the drivers door. Doesn't do it all the time but the only time I hear it is in 5th gear. Doesn't make any difference if the clutch is engaged or disengaged. As soon as I come out of 5th the noise quits. Has been doing this for about 25-30,000 miles. The noise I'm getting now is the "wind whistle in the cave" whick I think is the throw out bearing. Will have to ask somebody smarter than me about this.

Got a guy from a good transmission shop to go for a drive, his opinion= It sounds possible that the dreaded 5th gear nut is comming loose, I have seen alot of them he said. . It actually puts pressure on one of the bearings and when that pressure is'nt there the bearing gets noisy. I'm gonna check the fluid tonight but other wise I gotta keep driving (300 miles to go and then daily 100 in the bush). My ears are on high alert to see if the noise changes.

Had the same noise in 5th and 2nd and 3rd after a long hard run only pulling 8k on the trailer. Called Standard trans and they sent a rebuild with the full spline. Old trans 5th nut was backed off about 1/4 turn and 5th was quite loose.
