I'm just gonna put it out there that the automatic transmissions in diesels suck!#@$%!

I'm sick of my transmission not downshifting or upshifting at the right time or with any noticeable firmness at all. What are the best good upgrades by the best names for the 1998. 5 47rh transmission, i. e. torque converters, valve bodies, billet shafts. All input is welcome, thankyou in advance.

I love my auto Suncoast and believe it or not I think it shifts more than I would in a manual transmission. It was triple disc torque convertor, billet input, intermediate, output, and flexplate. Absolutely love it and it hits the gears like a racecar!

Every item that I put in my trans is from DTT-except the fluid-. It has been 5 years since most of it was bought, so I won't quote thier prices. You can go to thier site or call them for that.

last year was the latest -- a valvebody---. I fooled with my VB for years. I have 20 years experience with 7272's, 518's, 44RE's, 46rh's, and 47RH's.

Thier vb was worth the price.

I bet I had mine out a dozen times tinkering. I probably used $400 of fluid!!!!

A local friend of mine had his '07 done with a full DTT and additionally a DTT shift enhanser. It's an amazing improvement over my old '99 with a DTT. I thought the '99 was nice... :)

Grumpy 4x4 and me must have the same transmission (complete competition race/sled edition) =), It was around $9000 and I installed it myself, though i ordered it straight from suncoast.

Grumpy, does your transmission shift really really hard? I was just wondering because mine from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd shift hard enough it feels like a straight gear almost. 3rd into 4th just sounds like a easy shift and pulling power.

if you are not going above 450HP and not doing abusive stuff like boosted launches you can get a Tq converter that will hold 650HP for less than $900 and it will be firm and be lower stall than the factory POS. A valve body will be needed too. $1400 + install is a great way to go if your trans is still fresh, or get it rebuilt with the above parts if you don't want to spend $4k on a built trans.

Hello Will,

I put the ATS Triple Lock TC, VB, and Controller in my 02 back when the truck was new. Nothing was wrong at the time just wanted a trans that would last and perform under a load (truck camper). The truck had 10,000 miles on it at that time.

It's shifting today like it was just done yesterday. Nice firm shifts and with the controller you can set the TC lockup and disenguage where you want it. I'm very happy with ATS.

Good Luck.

I've heard the best stall speed is about 1600 rpm, is that about right? Whats the stock converter stall speed? When I decide to get converter I'll keep you in mind.

I put in a BD torque convertor (low stall), valve body, power lock, torque lock, total cost was in the are of $2,500. 00. (five years ago) Still shifting and working great. 360 HP and 1,000 FTLBS of torque. Going to go higher and hoping the BD transmission will take it. If it doesn't I am going to look into ATS, I will be interrested to hear how it works out for you.

Chip's Transmission

I'm having my transmission done by Chip's. Talked to Phil yesterday. They build exactly what you need and will answer ANY questions you may have. I would recommend calling and getting some information because what you want and what you need may be two different things.

I have had a DTT transmission my truck since they started selling them and I would not have any other. With that said I would find a good installer in your area and go with what ever they sell. Any of the companies listed sell great parts but the installer makes all the difference.

A good transmission makes all the difference in our trucks.
