POSTED EARLY LAST WEEK: My '03 4WD HO with 6 speed NV5600 TM has been "shifting funny". It's an intermittent problem and I know when I take it to the dealer, they will not be able to duplicate it. It started off doing it about once a week, now it's probably once a day. My wife just took it to lunch and she thought she was going to be stranded because it did it 3 or 4 times in a row.

Of course, I always start out in 2nd, and it seems like it's usually on the first shift between 2nd and 3rd that the shift doesn't happen immediately when I let the clutch out. In fact, it seems like it may take it about a second or so to engage, then it happens all at once, like I popped the clutch. Then you will hear a kind of clunk like it shifted all at once.

Truck has about 85,000 miles on it. Not BOMBed at all. Straight up 5. 9L HO.

NEW SYMPTOMS FROM THIS WEEKEND:

OK, new symptom. This weekend, had a bed about half full of gravel, backing up a steep bank in 4L. Truck started popping really bad coming from somewhere underneath. My wife said it sounded like it was coming from the center of the truck. It felt like something was slipping when it was popping, like it wasn't moving as much as it should have. It popped faster when I revved the engine slightly. I put it in 4H and it still did it. In both forward and reverse. Put it in 2H and it still did it until I got off the hill. Then I couldn't get it to do it again when I was unloaded, but I didn't really get on it too hard, because I was 2 hours from home and didn't want to pay a tow bill. Could this still go along with the throw out bearing (see previous post at here )? Anybody out there from central KY that knows a good transmission shop?

Do these symptoms go together or not? Honestly, I'm an engine guy, haven't fooled with Transmissions much at all, so this is all new to me.
