Folks:

It hasn't been my summer, or my truck's for that matter. . The APPS sensor in my 2500 died in June, $500 or so to replace. Then the ac went out, rusted evaporator core, $1550. , and it's still not all that cold. The next week, overdrive started cutting in and out. Another $1500 in a shift kit and a new torque convertor, and it's still doing the same thing. It's a 2000 with 113k mileage. With all of the problems I'm having, I just wish that I could be assured of at least getting something fixed for all the dollars I'm throwing at it.

To that end, I've started wondering about the feasibility of junking the automatic and fitting a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission in its place. So for starters, is this possible, or is there just too much work to retro-fitting a manual in place of the garbage transmission currently in place? Are there any shops you guys might recommend where this might be done? Any ideas on what the cost for something like this would be? Any other thoughts? Has anybody else done this? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. This vehicle is paid off, and I'd like to think that I could get another 10 years out of it. Living in Texas, body rot isn't going to be a problem. Anyway, thanks for any replies-

If you just HAVE to have a truck with a stick shift, then it's easier to sell your automatic and get one with a stick. But the auto-to-stick transfer certainly has been done, I have read threads about it before, so if you do a search here you might be able to find the threads which tell all which has to be done. Or maybe someone who has done this transfer will chime in.

However, these automatics (yours is a 47RE) can be REAL sweet trannys if the proper transmission guru gets ahold of it. I wish to heck you'd asked here before you plunked down the money for a shift-kit and a T. C! But ya didn't. So lets go from there... what kind of T. C. did they put in? New OEM? Rebuilt OEM? Brand-X? Generic Triple-disk? There are only a few Trans. specialists who truly understand how to make the Dodge trans bullet-proof behind the torque of the massive Cummins. ATS is one. Goerends is another. Suncoast makes one. And BD I believe. Also DTT. If you plan on keeping your automatic, I'd start by calling some of the transmission vendors I mentioned, and ask them if they have anybody in your area. ATS probably has the most affiliated shops in the country--including TST Products, of Columbus, Ind. , and Blumenthals Heavy Duty--and Sheids too I think--those are pretty some good endorsements. Anyway, my idea is that if you were to take your truck to one of these types of shops, they could tell you exactly what is wrong with your transmission, and what it would take to fix it. However with 117,000 you might just have to do a complete rebuild.

Anyway, let us know if you decide to replace the automatic with a stick. Guys here have done it all right, and somebody here knows exactly what it takes. If you really love your present truck, that might be the way you need to go.

hello, you did not realy give enough info to tell what is realy wrong, does it do it all the time, only when its hot, or... . , a good transmission man with a obd 2 scan tool could tell you in a hurry,at a dealer, its sounds like the gov pres senor and or gov solinod, thats a common trouble, the kick down cable could be out of adjustment, are you sure its kicking out of od?not the tcc kicking out, check to make sure the elect plugs are clean and plugged in good, hope this helps,

trans problems

Well I am glad that you had a good truck up to lately?? The one post says that he got 260 on an auto with the 275 injectors. Mine made 258 with the 275's and a 5 spd. Never has run the way everyone elses does!!!

electrical problems same thing happened to me. u can change the valve body to eliminate all that to a hydryolic valve body. have scan tps sensor could be bad my truck started idling funny and would run crappy at higher rpm's

Your OD problem is NOT in the transmission!! It is external in the electrical system. Noise! Check battery grounds, batteries too.

I purchased my truck new with 3 miles on it. By the time it reached 10000 miles it was already hunting. Took it to the dealer and nothing comes up on the scan tool. lived with it for another 40000 miles and then decided to try and fix it. I assumed it was hunting in and out of TC lockup. So I tried the battery grounds and it worked fine for about 5000 miles then I tried the rewire of the APPS to the PCM again worked for about 9000 miles. Tried resetting the APPS to correct voltage as specified on the back of the APPS same result. Searched the forums for more info found this " Dodge Ram Cummins 24V Truck Converter Clutch Cycling Repair. " ordered the filter ($16. 00) X 2 since my friend was experiencing the same problem. Filter arrives we installed both of them and I have put well over 100000 miles since the filter and it has not repeated the hunting in and out of lock-up since. The truck now has 215000 on it and the transmission has just been drained and filter changed about every 30000 miles still sifts like it was brand new (actually better). The only draw back is the fact that downshifts are delayed by a couple of seconds. I pull a 10000 Lb fifth wheel a couple times a month or more. I love my truck and I have since the day I drove it off the lot. If I had the money I would buy a brand new one and save this one for my grandson (5 more years). I believe you can fix your problems cheaper than installing a manual transmission. Oo.
