Transmission fluid change

Ive been getting a little transmission slippage in my '06. It only does it when accelerating out of a turn going from 1st to 2nd gear.

Its got 73,000 miles and i have no idea when the fluid/filter has been changed. What do yall think?

When it goes to shift from 1st to second the rpms go up and the truck doesnt go. Will it hurt the transmission to change the fluid if it has never been changed? I know on the older auto trannys, they say if you change the fluid on a higher milage transmission, and it has never been changed, it may make the transmission go out.

No power adders, it is bone stock.

if it was me, i would definitly change the fluid. then see what that does. i dont see how putting in good fresh fluid would hurt the transmission in any way... .

Just dropping the pan and changing out the fluid and filter you should be o. k. . I would also adjust bands while you are at it. It's a transmission flush thats not recommended on high mileage transmissions as it tends to loosen up all the crud and clog things up.

That sounds more like low fluid or possibly plugged filter. Do the basic service first and while your at it a governot solenoid and transducer to eliminate them being a problem.

My '06 mega cab does the same thing. It's had the fluid changed when required, it only has 37000 on it. It's been to the dealer twice for this, but they can never get it to replicate the problem.

Ok, there is just not enough info to even think it is a problem.

First thing is make sure the fluid is full. One MUST check the fluid level with the engine and trans at operating temp, on a level surface, and transmission in NEUTRAL. Check both sides of the stick for level reference as it can read high on one side low on the other, take the low reading.

These transmissions shift totally strange at low rpm's and low throttle. You get hesitation, hangs, almost a cutaway, and shuttle shifting unless the APPS has some pretty good advance in it

If you are turning and easing into the throttle what you are feeling is probably shuttle shift. Does the same thing happen if you are more aggressive with the throttle? If all works fine straight or turning and under rmodest throttle it is just the nature of the beast.

If you want to fix that particular problem then it is some VB work and an aftermarket box to address the issue

What exactly is shuttle shift? I usually notice the problem going around a traffic circle, or turning a corner in my neighborhood; which is a slow speed and easing into the throtlle. If I get onto the gas I don't really notice any problems. Fluid is full and clean.

Yep, thats typical operation unless you go into the VB and modify the pressures or add a shift enhancer. Sometimes just changing the gov solenoid and transducer will solve most of the problem.

The shuttle shift manifests in a couple ways. The most common is a shuttle between 1st and 2nd under light throttle. The trans can't make up its mind what gear it wants so it just bounces back and forth.

The other way is what you are describing, almost like it is out of gear and hit neutral for a second so you get a dead spot in the pull. What has happened is it is literally between 2 gears and the pressures are just right so it doesn't shift to either one until either wheel speed or gov pressure changes.

If you have one that does that put a Smarty on 1 or 2 and crank the TQ management up to medium. It will drive the trans nuts trying to figure out what gear to be in. :-laf

Thanks for the info guys, im goin to do a fluid/filter change on my next off day and go from there. What brand of fluid and filter do yall recommend?

I also had another issue today. I had the cruise set at about 68, and slowed down to 55 to pass through a small community for about a mile(just tapped the brake pedal and coasted thru. ) When i got out of town and hit the resume button to get back to speed, it jumped up to 2800 rpms and wouldnt gain speed. I got out of it and let it shift back down and eased it up. Sounds to me like it downshifted one to many gears. Is this a problem or a common occurance?

Yep, mine does that all the time. Resume the CC at to low a speed and it just downshifts, hits the rev limiter, and won't upshift. The ECU and CC have a few issues under certain circumstances.

As for the fluid at 73,000 I would just use a dex 4 approved fluid. Check the fluid color and smell. If your presure is down, low power, 1st gear, turning, you could have toasted the low gear clutch packs. The resulting metal to metal contact is no good.

Ummm, 1st gear is a one way clutch in auto mode and band apply in manual mode. No clutch pack there. The only clutches on at that time are the forwards.
