I just finished adjusting the bands on my 47re automatic. Been told its the same as the 727. Bands are fine and I followed the service manual proceedure. I also tried the 1/4 inch allen key method. Both work fine for the right adjustment. Now the problem is I still get this hard shift from first to second which is jerks the truck harder above 2000 rpms. Is it a problem with the throttle linkage going out of adjustment or is it something more serious that requires a transmission shop? The service manual shows a special tool being used to set the throttle linkage. Any one know the dimensions of this tool? ( I shudder at the thought of some long hair working on my truck):(

Tansmission question

We are having the same problem with our 95 Dodge It takes a long time shifting from first to second gear, it shifts real strong , no slipping. If you step down on it hard it seems to go ok. We saw your posting in febuary and wondered if you got yours fixed and if you have any tips for us. It would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

The second gear band your transmission could be going or has gone.

The first to second gear jerk is the same thing that my old dodge did and it was the second gear band. The second gear band is notorious for having problems in the RE trans.

Mine does not have a problem with late shift time. I did some more research on the problem. The hard shift occurs at different specific speeds. Mostly at 1950 rpm. There seems to be a throttle linkage adjustment that has to be correct to make the shift more smooth. The service manual mentions a special tool needed for the correct setting of the transmission throttle cable. They don't mention the size ( very smart these Dodge boys). I read the thread about the second gear band being a problem. If thats the case, mine is still under warranty. I have no choice but to let the Dealer fix it. :(

Thanks Don for the info. I'll look into it with my Dealer.

We thought it was a throttle linkage as well. Seemed like it at the time. Went so far as to adjust the thing all over the place and nothing worked.

Dern second gear band is junk in that RE.

good luck and holler back with whatcha find out.

grtescpa,

I dunno about a special tool for adjusting the kickdown cable if yours is the same as my '95. I think it is. It's different on the 24V engines. All you need is a small C clamp or very strong fingers. The manual is NOT clear about how to do it, but it's pretty easy. The thing that is adjusted is NOT the cable length. It's the length of the cable housing that is adjusted. Making it longer is the same as making the cable short and vice versa. The kickdown cable is the lower of the three cables on the throttle linkage. The cable housing has a pointed end that comes out of a black cube shaped thing. There is a button shaped hump on one side of the cube. That is NOT the button. It is a housing for the button spring. The button is the flat side of the cube opposite the hump. Measure how far the end of the cable housing protrudes so you can put it back like you found it if adjusting doesn't help. Use the little C clamp to press and hold the button so you can move the pointed end in or out. Try it and see what happens. If messing around with it doesn't help put if back like you found it.
