First I am new to the site I have a 2006 3500 drw stock. I am having an issue with what I assume is the torque converter. Whem I am pulling a heavy load and have to stop on a hill it doens't want to pull the hill. I have to push the acceratetor all the way to floor, then after 10 seconds or so it will finally move. What can I do to fix this.

Not stop on a hill comes to mind. . but thats generally not under ones control. :D

Are you manually down shifting to 1st or leaving it in drive? Does that make a difference? The gov pressure solenoid is an issue on these units and that will cause 2nd and even 3rd gear starts.

What does your tach say when your trying to move? Is it revving and no movement or just hanging around 2100 rpms till you start to move? These trucks have TQ management that defuels the engine until you hit about 5 mph and they will not rev high enough at times to make emough power.

All that said, the stock TC is pretty sloppy and using it for towing heavy doesn't do it any good. How much weight are you towing when this happens? What does it do when its empty?

Welcome to the TDR. Instead of entering your truck info all the time you can go to the Discussions Foums drop down menu at the top of the page, select User Control Panel when it expands, and choose the Edit signature feature in the left pane. This will auto put it at the bottom of the first post in a thread you make. :)

Thanks for responding Cerberusiam, I am leaving it in drive, set in tow mode, but have tried it both ways. The tach is around 2300 - 2400 rpms till it decides to start moving then comes down. I usually pull around 10k to 12k on dump trailer. If I put it in four wheel drive its not as bad, and in four wheel low it doesn't do it at all.

Good answer Cerberusiam.

Welcome Granduer!

The rpms are enough to build the power, but, it sounds like the TC is a little weaker than normal. I was expecting a 20k trailer with your description of the problem as the stocker should react better than that with that weight.

IMO, to fix it you will need to replace the TC with one that has a decent fluid coupling and billet cover. If you tow a lot it will be a good upgrade. A shift kit or VB would also be a good idea as the stock pressures leave a lot to be desired when towing unless you mash the throttle all the time.

The 05+ autos are really setup to work better when you get the rpms over 2500 which is not good for mileage and is wasting the low end TQ. There are varying levels of modifications to address the problems, its all in what you want to do and spend. :)

I had the same problem with my 06 when pulling a heavy load (about 15k lbs. ) I had a Sun Coast torque converter and valve body installed which solved the problem.
