Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 12 valve air compressor question

Greeting, I recently had my transmission rebuilt with the following: triple disk torque converter, billet input shaft, rebuilt valve body, ect. I'm having an issue when I'm driving 50-60 mph... when I mash the throttle to the floor and begin accelerating, the transmission starts to shake a bit like it wants to come out of gear.

Has anyone had these issues? Does the electronics need to be reflashed?

Thanks in advance
Nick

What does the guy that built the transmission say? What makes you think it is the transmission and not a drive line issue. Tell us more about the truck! 2x4 or 4x4 short or long bed? One piece or two piece drive line? BTW, I grew up in PA! PAHS class of 63!

On Edit: I found this in your profile: 2001 quad-cab long bed, afe stage 2, airdog 150, bd super b single, edge juice w/ attitude, 4"magnaflow

Sure it is not a drive line/Center carrier bearing issue. Also some 2nd gen when pulling hard get a rear spring wrap/unwrap situation that puts a vibration into the chassis. Has the truck been lifted?

Hey Chris, thanks for your input! My truck is a 4x4 long bed. I will have the carrier bearing checked out. The only lifting of the truck I have done is the 2" leveling puck up forward.
Love living in P.A. but I'm a transplant from South Whidbey Island!

Thanks again!
Nick

I assume you didn't have this problem before? What gear is it in? If it's in OD when it happens, lock it out of OD and see if it's still there. What kind of shape are the transmission mounts in? Is all the hardware tight?

Cjmeyer1, thanks for the input! Before I had the transmission rebuilt, I didn't encounter this issue! After the rebuild, I've had this problem after the truck shifts into overdrive doing 70-80 mph.
I will have everything checked out by somebody who knows 47re transmissions... Kind of thinking of Dynomite Diesel in Monroe, Washington!

I'm not happy with the rebuild... Spent $4900 on it... I'm done supporting the small town I live in):

Thanks again,
Nick

Dynomite Diesel sent me to Mike at North State Auto Clinic in Marysville. That is who they have rebuild their trannys. They recently rebuilt my DTT transmission that broke the direct drum clutch plate. They had my 47RE removed and on the bench in 1.5 hours(4x4). Mike let me watch him take apart the transmission. Explaining things to me as he went it was 30 minutes to take the transmission complete apart. It appeared he could had been blind folded and did it just as fast.

Their number is 360-659-3333. Tell them Chris/Snoking sent you to them.

There's really not a lot to an automatic transmission. We're taught to fear them and even I did despite the fact that I work on 8-speed, 15-speed, 16-speed and 19-speed powershifts that make an automatic look like a lego set. I tore into the TH350 in my '72 Chevy once when it was slipping. I bought a rebuild kit and an "expert" told me it was probably the main clutch or forward clutch, I can't remember which. The FIRST one you get to, at least. So I dug into it and sure enough, that clutch was bad. In the interest of time I didn't go any further. I put it back in and it was better but still slipped. Lesson learned. Do the whole thing. I took it back apart and when I got in further one of the big hard parts was bad and I didn't have another transmission. A buddy had one and gave it to me and if it was a TH350 it was a different TH350 and that part was different and it didn't look like it would fit. But I got to looking and realized I could press the shafts out of the drums and swap them and see if it would work. So I did some SERIOUS parts swapping around, threw it back together and it worked like a charm. I think one of these days I'm going to find a good 47RE core and build my own to keep around just in case. I think the profit margin for those guys would probably make us sick if we knew the truth. I suspect that a guy could build TWO on his own for the same money. And I'm not a big believer that you HAVE to have "billet shafts". The FACTORY shafts are actually "billet" but there IS a difference in materials. I'm guessing that what causes stock shafts to break isn't the power but the shock load during a fast shift. A stock has some overlap during shifts as one element applies and the other releases. Those built trannies shift so quick that the transmission is basically in "neutral" for a split second and when it completes the shift it's almost like you're neutral-dropping it just a little every time it shifts. And the torque converters slam in so much harder on those. Not good. I like making power and I like performance. I don't like fixing stuff all the time. I've cruised some of those drag truck forums and those guys are just...nuts, I guess. I'd use a different term but nuts will work. And what's amazing is how many of them DON'T DO THEIR OWN WORK. I think that if I had a truck running 10s and had blown up 10 or 20 or 30 $5000+ trannies to do it, I would have learned to rebuild trannies at some point. I can't remember his name but one of those big-dog diesel drag truck guys running a Duramax went through FORTY built-to-the-hilt Allisons and then went to the Duraflite 47RE. I'm sorry, but that's not dedication. That's obsession. That's just self-abuse. Crazy.

Nick, another thought I had was that maybe the guy miss "clocked" the drive line(s) U-joints when he put it back together. Chris

Are you in OD when this happens? Does it stay in OD and keep the TC locked or unlock and downshift? Where eaxactly in the sequence does it shudder?

Chris, I went and talked to Mike at North State Auto when I was shopping around to have my transmission rebuilt... should have went with him but I went with the convenience factor instead and had it done here in Pt. Angeles... big mistake.

Thanks for guiding me in the rite direction!

Anything is possible. Especially if they don't double-spline the shaft and yoke so it can only be assembled one way. I'm thinking torque converter. Maybe a balance issue when it locks up? Those triple-disk converters have a lot of parts slinging around in them. It's going to take some diagnosis. I'd put it up on good stands and try it with no load. That should make it easier to see anyway. Maybe it's a pressure problem and it's just slipping very rapidly, kicking in and out.

Vaughn, its a small world... my parents had a house down close to the water at Mutiny Bay and I worked at the Useless Bay Golf & Country Club Pro Shop in high school in the early 90's... great place to grow up!!

Yes definitely a small world, chances are we crossed paths because we went to the club house to swim and play tennis in the summer! Once I hit 53mph on my bike racing my brother down the steep hill past there coming off the highway, that was scary :)
