Transmission Question

Would like to swap out the 4 speed OD with a 6 speed transmission, Is this possible to do? Thinking of a 68RE if it will bolt on. Also would I need to swap any computers? Or just do a upgrade on the 4 speed? I am looking for something better than stock mainly for towing. Open for suggestions.

There’s a local “Stage II” 47/48RE going on 18 years of no issues.

Jeff Garmon can build it so you won’t have anymore issues.

Another option to update your 4 speed to have modern drivability. I have no experience with this item, just saw it mentioned elsewhere on this forum, thought it’s a good item.

The sad part of the 48RE is the big gap between third, direct 1 to 1, and the deep .69 OD. My truck is a late december 2006 built that got the 6.7 AE ratio 6 speed G56. My trans has a .74 OD but I wish it had a lower one like the 68REF has. I am either in 5th which is direct, 1 to 1 or 6th which is .74. I can tow well in 6th but would like something in between OD and direct. The 68RFE has a .81 5th for towing and a .62 highway OD for 6th.
