I've always used O/D when loaded or towing. I focus more on RPM and exhaust temperatures. With 3.51 gears I'm always using the O/D ON-OFF switch and third gear lockup but on level roads and 90+ kph I'll be in fourth. These days I have a slide-in camper and tow an ATV trailer. That puts my GVW at 11K (max) and a trailer at around 2K lbs. There's a lot of mountains where I live (British Columbia).
