5th Gear Nut Removal And Replacement Procedure?

I was wondering where I could find a detailed description of how to remove a 5th gear nut in a 1997 Dodge 5 speed manual and replace it. Also I would like to know whether I should upgrade the shaft and nut. Pictures would help alot.

Hey, Joel. . Let us know how this goes for you. I've been wondering when my 97 will need a 5th gear nut fix and how to upgrade the mainshaft. Where are you getting the parts from. Quad 4x4 and Blumenfels (I just know I spelt that worng) should have then. Someday..... I see this repair in my future... . or should I fix it afor it breaks... humm.

Dave M, I actually was asking this question for my friend so I just called him up and asked him how it went. He said the 5th gear nut had just come off so nothing was broken. He dropped the driveshafts and the transfer case to get at the back of the transmission. Then he threaded the 5th gear nut back on with some extra-strong loctite. He said he would not recommend just glueing it if you pull alot or if you have your truck turned up. Going by your signature you probably should upgrade the mainshaft. He said Blumenfels (spelled wrong) has good prices. He also sais if you wait to replace it till the nut comes off it is ok. Hope this helps.

I was told that you can drill throught the side of the nut and tap it for a set screw, and then tighten the set screw down... If mine lets go that what I am going to do... .
