So here's the story, The Getrag decides to grenade itself on the Interstate a few months back and I have been without a pickup since.

I don't think the transmission is worth rebuilding(I'm no expert but that is what friends who have looked at it say). I need the truck since I now live on a couple of acres and need to move my horse from Colorado to Wyoming.

So what are the best options? Money is tight since I just bought a new home.

Is there a good place to pickup a used Getrag? and is it even worth it?

Do I use another transmission? and if so which one?

I use this truck for Wheelin and odds and ends around the property(ie Horse Trailer, Hay, And moving a tractor around)

Thanks

James

I saw a $800 one on E-bay w/o a core charge. I think I would try to get a reference from one or two of their customers first. I believe that they are selling them constantly so there is no rush.

best of luck no matter what you choose to do.

I agree with 'DB on this... . also no matter which way you go, overfill the replacement transmission by 1 quart... . this will keep all your internals lubed when the truck works on steep grades..... this trick has worked for ALOT of guys running the Getrag trans... .

bob.

So are there any good places to pick up used Getrags?

Or do I need to find a shop that sells rebuilds?

If anyone has a line on either please let me know.

Ebay is good for rebuilt Getrags... . for a replacement the NV4500 is not a bad deal... it's more than a G360. I am 2WD and the dirveshaft has to be shortened by 6. 5 inches and a new bellhousing used as well. For the 4WD I am not sure what all is involved... but, I know that the sitck shift hole has to be moved back by 4. 5 inches. I know the conversion kit for the NV4500 is around 2300/2400 bucks. . and they will normally accept a G360 as a core... they are on mine. I have seen NV4500's on Ebay for 800+... I think the standard going rate on one is 1300 rebuilt... with all the good stuff. . but you will need more... I think you could hit up the junk yard for a bellhousing and the other stuff... . www.standardtransmission.com or www.drivetrain.com

have all the particulars on what is involved and they also sell rebuilt G360's and they sell the rebuild kits... clutches... and transmission parts... they are your

best resource... . :{

So if I get my hands on a Bell Housing from lets say a 2nd Gen and the NV4500 as well..... I could bolt the 2 of them right behind my 1st Gen with only a new crossmember, Shifter Hole, and a few tweaks on the drive shaft lenght?

Well... . supposidly that is the trick... . there is a difference for the 2WD and

4WD installs... . mine is out right now and I am headed to Ft. Worth today...

I will let you know how it all went by the end of the week... I am sure there

will be a few hurdles... I plan on seeing exactly what it is that I have to do

when I am in Ft. Worth... as far as the stick shift hole... and the crossmember

goes... . wrestling around with near 300 pounds under the truck is no fun... . I will keep you posted.
