HI. I have a new 06 quad cab 4x4 Cummins and I am coming from an 02 f250 PSD,both have/had autos. How is the shift strategy set up on these new trucks?Mine seems to shift alot and/or unlock/lock the TC lots. Does the TC lock up at any time other than after 3rd and OD?It seems if I drive it a bit hard it does fine and shifts when it should, but if I am driving slow and in between(like city driving) it shifts locks unlocks all kinds of stuff. Truck has 500 miles on it. Can someone explain how these trannys work? Thanks

I was waiting to see if any '06 people would chime in. I -think- the 05 and 06 shift the same.

The '05 model shifts 1;2;3;4;locks TC under normal throttle.

Alternately under a heavier load it will go 1;2;3;locks TC;4. It also shifts this way in tow mode.

Some trucks are bad about swapping back and forth between 1-2 or 2-3 at low speeds and small throttle changes.

Part of it may be driving technique. The trans does not like it nor respond well at low to mid speed if you play with the throttle or have a 'nervous foot'. It works best to accelerate briskly to your chosen speed or at least keep the throttle in a steady position. At low speeds just a little motion can cause shifting.

If yours is actually locking up and then unlocking a lot I would get it checked. That's not normal. Once mine locks up it's stays that way without a major speed drop or stomping the throttle.

I dont know if its locking up or not thats why I am asking. I know that the Fords have different ECU programs and each one controls the transmission functions in different ways(Some lock up TC in 2nd some dont etc) so that is what I am trying to find out. But,by the way you have explained it that seems to be whats happening to me. I will keep on it. Thanks.

Dodge does not have dozens of software releases like Ford, just a few updates.

I would go back to where I bought it and take a ride with the service guys, then take a ride in another new truck for comparison. That should clear it up.
