I need some help here. I posted before about the rear of my 5 spd leaking and needing to replace the seal. I got to looking today and cannot figure out how to get the seal out. I know the drive shaft needs to come down and after that I am not sure what is next. Anyone do this repair before?

Try -- email address removed --. He's the transmission guy. Knows the NV4500 very well.

There are several different seal sizes for different models, so make sure to take a good look at it and some measurements before you go to buy one. Might save you a trip. :)

Mine had a large "flange" that is flush with the end of the tail housing. I just knocked a flat-blade screwdriver between it and the tailhousing and twisted it to pull it out a little. Keep doing this a little at a time around the seal. Don't get too carried away, the tail housing is aluminum.

Well mine has a rubber boot around the shaft and there is no nut holding it to the transmission. I can move the boot back and forth. If I take the driveshaft down will the shaft slide out of the transmission?

The "rubber boot" is part of the seal. As far as getting the yoke out of the transmission, it slides right out when you drop the drive shaft.

To drop the drive shaft:

  • Try to park with the front end down hill as much as possible so as little transmission oil runs out as possible. Make sure to set your parking brake and chock all wheels.
  • Remove the four bolts holding the clamps on the rear u-joint (seems like they take an 8mm 12-point socket) and gently knock the u-joint out of the pinion yoke.
  • Tape the caps in place so they won't come off. Be careful, that drive shaft is pretty heavy. Don't pull the drive shaft apart unless you just feel like you have to. If you do, make sure to mark it so that you have it properly lined up when you put it back together.
  • Then you will need a 15mm box end wrench and a 15mm deep-well socket (I could be wrong on the sizes) to remove the carrier bearing. Put the wrench on the nuts on top of the cross member and use the socket from below. Again, be careful, it's pretty heavy.
  • Then push the drive shaft toward the rear of the truck until the yoke slides out of the transmission. A small amount of transmission oil will drip out.
  • Install in reverse order. Make sure on the rear u-joint that you get it centered in the pinion yoke between the tabs on both sides and don't go crazy re-torquing the strap bolts.

Hope this will help you. :)

Big Papa,

Thank you for the your help it is very appreciated. Looks like I was on the right track with this one. Do you know anything about changing the axle seal on a Dana 80?

S,

I have not been into a rear axle, yet. ;) Maybe start another thread, I'm sure somebody can help you. Good luck.
