I just bought an 02 with 188k miles on it. No idea how it has been serviced, what are the recommendations for servicing the transmission? If is i like the rest of the truck, it probably needs servicing and what fluids are recommended?

ditto amsoil, changed to amsoil at 140k and now with 240k. I may change again due to a slight leak around the pto covers. added the big filter mag magnet to the pto, dying to see if anything is clinging to the inside. Geno's has a filter kit. Don't stop there, rear(s) and transfer case if you got one should be done also.

I am currently in the process of installing a rebuilt NV4500 in my 1998. 5 truck. The transmission destroyed itself at 190k when the rear seal on the transmission failed and the gear oil fed into the transfer case. Neither the transmission or transfer case leaked oil but when I drained the transfer case, over double the capacity of oil came from unit.

The moral of the story is to drain the transfer case along with the transmission and measure the amount for fluid from each... you should have about 4 quarts from the transmission and a little over 3 quarts on the transfer case. Adjust numbers for specs involved with a 2002 but the numbers should be close.

I learned a valuable lesson with this transmission and hopefully you will avoid my fate.

Thanks for the info. I will get that done. Also recently replaced lift pump and removed banjo fittings at the filter as opposed at the pump due to conveniency, found minor leak at banjo bolt yesterday, would that cause the truck to loose its prime after running it several miles then letting it sit? I need to replace the flat washers at the filter and will do so asap. It is a minor leak, but still a leak. I tried tightening the banjo bolt, but it still leaks. Thanks.
