transmission service?

Just dropped truck off for TSB's. Dealer says I need $150 transmission service. Says fluid change every 15k miles - anyone heard that one yet?

Mine here in Utah told me the same 15k deal. I haven't taken it in yet.

That being said, their just trying to make money.

I had mine done at 15k they and agreed that it should be done. They charged me 100 bucks.

It's called Service Writer's "commission for added service" at your expense!



The Owner's Manual says 30,000 miles. I do mine myself and plan to do it at 15,000 mile intervals at the same time as I service the rear axle.

I checked the factory shop manual and it states 30K for severe and 60K for normal 15K changes is way paranoid!!

Changing out the Fluid

You do it yourselfer's doing your transmission fluid changes are you just dropping the pan an changing that out, or are you doing a complete change out of all fluid. All of my other vehicles I have always just changed out what was in the pan with a new filter, but changed it out around 25K to 30K mile intervals. Had it changed out by a couple of mechanic friends also an that's the way they do it also. They refer to the color still having a good red tint (good) an brown color (needs changed) or burn't smell to the fluid (not good).

Drop the pan, change the filter, re-install the pan with a new gasket, and refill with OEM approved fluid at the intervals specified in the Owners Manual. I've used this procedure in GM, Ford, and Chrysler automatics for years and in some vehicles that I have driven over 200,000 miles without a transmission failure. On the Chrysler automatics I check the bands every other fluid change if I think about it and have the time. All these vehicles have towed/hauled some kind of RV at least 50% of the time.

If you remove the filter and leave the pan under the truck overnight you also get 1/2 of the fluid out of the converter. Maybe that is only if there is a small seal leak to let the air in. Bewarned- that converter is HUGE. When you drain it it takes a lot of fluid. No more drain plug on the converter like in the '70's though.

I took my truck in for the vibration service bulletin a few weeks ago and got the same BS. Is DC instructing the dealers to do this?



By the way, the 2200RPM vibe is gone!

I doubt it; however, at dealer meetings the dealers usually discuss among themselves the methods they use to increase the service department volume and profit. It probably came from one of these discussions.



Also don't forget that most dealerships pay the service writer a commission on how much additional parts and service business he "creates" in the way of add-on services at the write up desk.
