Removing and replacing ALL the fliud is better any day then 4 to 7 qts on systems that hold 14 to 20. I handled MANY vehicles from 0 miles to worn slap out over 6 years Fleets and they OWNERS would give enough testimonials. As well as the real estate agents, yummy moms and nasty Wally wagons etc.

Like I said, flushing is fine... . for the first service dropping the pan is the only way to adjust the bands, so replacing the filter when it will have the most fines may as well be done while one is in there. I've yet to meet the technician skilled enought to adjust the bands with the pan on.

This discussion is very interesting, almost as interesting as discussing which oil is the best or why one should/shouldn't use an extended drain interval. None of which are as interesting as viewing a discussion of 45ACP vs. 9mm though..... :D

Adjusting the bands is also a more less LEAVE it alone kinda thing. Most if not all transmission builders will tell you the same thing. Usually only done on MAJOR overhaul. Every transmission builder I ask about band adjustment always start with a grin and then spit the truth out. Old wording held over from the OLD 727 days. Been told maybe benifical on the 64 series units. Biggest thing that makes me nervous is on the sites the DO IT YOURSELFERS casing for more HARM then good. Every one that gets a diesel all of a sudden wants to do ALL this stuff do it AT HOME and lots of it is needless. Theres been posts about dropping the valve body to drain more fliud out and upon re torquing it ruined it etc. Change EVERY FLIUD the first month, flush a transmission at home in buckets etc. Chezz. I got friends that the FIRST time the diffs or trans service was a 90k road miles and now over 200k and going great. I believe in maintance but theres a happy medium. I know what works and deldt with the MULTITUDES of owners lined up out to the road every morning. Datsun/Nissan/G. M. /Isuzu(YUK)/Mazda(YUK)/ and D. C. products.

I may be JUST a DO IT YOURSELFER, but I have the time to treat my truck MUCH more CAREFULLY than some EXPERIENCED TECH who is in a BIG HURRY because he has a MULTITUDE of OWNERS lined up waiting for SERVICE. And YES, I have a 2-year TECHNICAL COLLEGE diploma in AUTO MECHANICS, even though I've never worked for a BUSY SHOP. Just because someone hasn't actually WORKED in the AUTO REPAIR BUSINESS doesn't mean that they are INCOMPETENT to work on their OWN VEHICLE, and saving money by DOING SERVICE YOURSELF isn't necessarily a BAD THING.

If you want to use the flush machine, knock yourself out. I'm not paying $70 for a guy with half a brain to do it. If I want to flush it, I'll just disco the transmission lines and let it pump new stuff in... I've done it before on trannies that got water in them.

As for changing the filter, well a filter is $8. Such a waste :-laf

Filters are more then $8 bucks these days. And your right such a waste. Some may be competent many others are not. most good techs know more about a product and the ins and out of it then you can conceive. Had a OLD man tell me once take a AVERAGE to MEDIOCRE dealer tech and his knowledge will surpass the BEST indepentent shops tech by far. I found this to be true when hiring time after time. This site is far better in the type of Diesel owner some of the freebie sites some of the questions and ANSWERS is unreal. Posters grab answers outa their axxxx.
