Have over 61,000 miles on my 48RE and it is time for transmission service as we will be driving the mountains next month. Before getting the service would like input from other members about changing over to synthetic trans fluid and also input about adding a larger pan. We pull a heavy 5iver and the trans temps get pretty high and stay there for long periods when we travel from Texas to Nevada and then to Michigan via Montana. I have read the ads that are always trying to sell us oil and new pans etc. , but would like to hear from folks that have some real experience with these driving conditions. Goal would be to reduce the fluid temp on such trips and make sure the fluid will hold up to the high temps.

Bigger Trans pan always helps, and your 48re uses synthetic trans fluid. Atf+4 is synthetic trans fluid. ;) You can get Mopar ATF+4 at WallyWorld for ~$4. 50 a quart. Don't forget to change your differential oil also & I would use 75-140 for your application. Amsoil, Royal Purple, ect.

I have the Double Deep Pan from Mag Hytek. We pull 35 toyhualer. Right of the bat, I noticed a 15 degree difference. Same grade (Cajon Pass, Ca. )Running Amsoil ATF. On flat ground, the temp never goes over 180 degrees pulling, (temps taken from the port in the pan). Average speed between 60-65.

I highly recommend the Mag-Hytec double deep as my old 12 valve with the 48re that I put behind it really liked it. My temps went from 180 to 160 with the big pan. I always use Mopar atf+4, no if ands or buts. I pulled a 26' Interstate enclosed trailer full of snowmobiles and an Arctic Fox 9. 5 slide in camper at the same time and it never sniveled. I like that Mopar fluid and my trans guy swears by it.

Differant classes of synthetics. Mopar Atf +4 is like a group 3. Not a group 4 or top tier synthitic like Amsoil full synthitic. I'd use a exchange machine and install a top tier full synthitic.
