Thanks for the suggestion Bob. Would you consider the flush unnecessary even if the flush was atf+4? I have never opted for the full flush, but I'm curious about professional opinions.

Careful with using flush as a descriptor for a fluid exchange. They are totally different operations that will just confuse the issue.

You cannot adequately flush a transmision, only the cooler and lines and that will require partial dis-assembly.

As Bob said, any shop that recommends using a chemical or additive, run don't walk away. All that needs done is a fludi exchange on a regular basis for best results.

There are many quality trans flush machines out there that do a good job. The decision should be based on the condition of the fluid.

The decision should be based on the condition of the fluid.

How does one reliability go about that?

Visually? That never has been a reliable way to tell condition of any fluid, aside from burnt to a crisp. Deciding to change fluid when it looks and smells bad is like shutting the barn door after the horse escapes. The damage is already done.

Composition testing? Who does that type of testing and what are the KPI's that need examined? At what point does the fluid become the problem? There is no generally accepted definition around that condition, just like engine oil.

I have not done mine yet, but when it gets to 30k I will, I do all my own service, what kills transmission fluid is it looses it's additives over time, changing only 30% of the fluid with a pan drain is a waist of time, ( that is how it was done in the 50's-80's, old school), all the fluid has to be replaced, doing the trans cooler line exchange is not a major task, and done correctly will do no harm, mine has an oversize pan with a drain plug, I will drain the pan, make a note of how much fluid there is, replace both filters, re install the pan, and replace that fluid with new, disconnect the cooler line run the engine and when I am almost to the amount of fluid the pan holds shut it down and refill, doing this about 4 times will have all the old fluid replaced, I did this a couple of times in my 05, and have done this on other vehicles I own, it is a great way to keep the trans healthy

I want to replace my stock fluid in my 08 with Amsoil synthetic so I need to get as much old fluid out as I can. However I can't see a way to disconnect the return line at the cooler or trans so I can use the pump and fill, pump and fill until fresh fluid comes out method. There seem to be special fittings at both the cooler and trans ends. What do you guys recommend. I'm going to be adding a deep pan at the same time.
