Well fellas i maybe faced with something i don't won't to do. My 98. 5 has been shuddering going into overdrive. Then she won't change from 2nd to 3rd. She'll rev to 3300 and still no change everytime. Added "Lubeguard" and WOW !! it made a big difference. Almost all the shudder and approx 40% of the 2nd to 3rd change went away. any comments or suggestions ?

APPS Reset Procedure

This procedure has shown to help 24 valve ISB engines. It is basically teaching the fly by wire accelerator on these trucks to reread the position of the pedal and it's limits. Most complaints this will help with is poor acceleration, improper shifting, bucking in 5 and 6 speeds. Has been known to increase fuel mileage in some instances.

1. Set parking brake

2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries

3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)

4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)

5. Return ignition to OFF position

6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event

7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor

8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly

9. Turn ignition switch OFF

10. Release parking brake

Give it a try cant hurt anything.

DM, you are right about the above, but i had already done that. That was the first thing i did after i searched the posts. I am going to change the oil and filter again and put a different ATF-3 in it this time with "Lubgaurd". If this don't do it, err well to the shop she goes.

For what it is worth, I tried the reset of the APPs (although, I disconnected the batteries overnight just to make sure). I reapplied the battery cables and fired the truck up, took for about a 7 mile or so test drive, and it appears the 'overdrive hunt' has gone away. I chose the short test drive because I live in the country, and its just about impossible to get over 55 mph because of the winding roads; my hunt seemed to happen primarily between 45 - 50 mph at light throttle.

If this is short term, so be it. I can live with it for now. I only have 92,156 miles on the truck with light towing, so I was a little suprised to have this problem. But after doing a quick search on the TDR1 boards, I see this is a fairly common problem that doesn't seem to be a 'truck killer'... . yet.

Some observations about my truck:

1. I have original batteries, and the terminals were pretty corroded. I cleaned them up.

2. I have not done anything to the transmission. My philosophy is that if it ain't leaking or making god-awfull noise, I'm not messing with it. However, I will probably think about dropping the pan as I get closer to the 100,000 mile mark, or if the overdrive hunt problem resurfaces.

3. I do not have the noise filter installed, but again, may look at that if the hunt comes back. By the way, which one should I get? I see there is one by DTT for around $50, and another called a HappiBox for around $100. Which is better/suggested?

4. I don't do allot of towing (but its not a mall cruiser either :) ). I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and since Hurricane Katrina wiped us off the face of the map, It has been getting a workout by other means; much more than it did pre-Storm. Course, I bought the Cummins for the durability and reliability more than the torque, but needed something that could also pull my boat :) Because of the light workout, how often should I be dropping the transmission pan and maintenance on the transmission itself? Since I bought the truck used with 20,000 miles, the owners manual wasn't in it, so where can I find a maintenance schedule for the truck? I do change the oil about every 5,000 and fuel filter every 15,000.

If the transmission hunt returns, will inform. Some seem to have this return after a period of time. How does this noise affect the APPS in that you have to reset it for this problem? Just does not make sense to me.

If you go to the forums at DTTs site you will find good advice from Biil K. about shudder. Most of the shudder is caused by fluid. Mine would start this at about 25,000 miles so at every 30k I had a complete service done. The service was complete flush, filter, the pressure was tweaked up and adj bands w/ 1 red bottle of lube guard. Trans would work great and then at about 25k start shifting a little funny and getting some shudder from TC, not bad but noticeable.

The last service at around 90k wasn't as effective so went to Abbotsford for a rebuild. Did the rebuild since I am ready to retire and didn't want to be sitting on the side of the road 'chatting' with my wife while waiting for a tow.
