I have an 04 48RE and just went over 40K miles. At 33K miles, I had the dealer service the transmission.

Now, let's see if I can explain the issue. This has started happening within the last 1000 miles, maybe. When I come to a complete stop(stoplight, stopsign. etc), I let off the brake and push on the throttle, the truck accelerates, shifts to 2nd, then almost immediately shifts back down to 1st rpm's come up but no go(almost like freewind), when this happens I let off the pedal the rpm comes down and it shifts back to 2nd then to 3rd and 4th fine. This scenario only happens as I described, there are no problems shifting from 2-3, 3-4th. There is no other freewind at any other rpm or gear.

So, I tried a few things, first I came to a stop, dropped the shifter to 1st, pushed the pedal all the way to 3K rpm just fine, no freewind, just great power. Next, I came to a stop shifted to 2nd, pushed the pedal, the truck accelerated fine in first, shifted to 2nd, then almost immediately shifted back to 1st and then the freewind.

Any ideas?

I'm thinking there is something in the computer. The transmission has never made an odd noise and the atf level is normal.

Anyone experience a similar problem? Is it just a matter of having the dealer reflash the computer?

Thanks for any help you can give,

Mike

It's not an uncommon condition under very light throttle..... there are some other posts on the issue. If you give it more gas it doesnt do it correct? One thing that's been tossed around as a solution is "resetting the APPS"... . e. g. resetting the throttle by wire settings.....

... . others say to disconnect the batteries for an hour or so, reconnect, turn on the key on (dont start), depress the gas pedal slowly to the floor (all the way) and then slowly release the gas pedal, turn to off position... . some say to do this 3 times..... this process didnt appear to work to well on my 05 (maybe i did the gas pedal to fast/slow)???

I personally found that if I disconnedted the batteries for 1 hour and then reconnected without doing anything else..... seems to have made it much better and minimized this issue... .

Hope this helps

The dealer should be able to read the computer and see if it is throwing any codes. If nothing else then for peace of mind. You might find that it is a simple fix.

Resetting the apps would only help with the converter locking, unlocking problem. shifting is controlled from inputs from govenor psi sensor, gov. psi solenoid, and output speed sensor. you should get a code stored with these, but not always.

Kick down cable adjustment should be check also. You would need a scan tool to check these things except for the cable adjustment. could also be an issue with the front band.

hope this helped

I have the Acton scan tool, it pulled no codes or Mil #'s.

When it starts to freewind, if I mash the throttle all it does is wind up the motor, mashing the throttle isn't causing it to shift.

Mine will act like it is locking/unlocking with light throttle and it does it at about 1600 RPMs. No codes. Doesn't do it under moderate/heavy acceleration. It acts like the APPS has a "flat" spot only noticeable under light acceleration.

If Under Warr, Take To Dealer. If It Is An O4 Then It Does Have Throttle

Cable Still. Make Sure The Frt Band Is Adjusted Properly, Then Replaced The Gov Solenoid On The Valve Body And Problem Will Go Away. It Is Caused Be Debris Getting Into The Solenoid, Only Known Sure Fix Is To Replace. You Can Firts Try To Shorten The Kickdown Cable And Give It More Throttle Pressure But Problem Will Probably Still Persist. Replace Solenoid.

DHawk, Thanks for the advice. This truck had to have a thrust washer put in because it was left out during the manufacturing process. There was some scuffing inside but the mechanic said he found no metal in the transmission. I guess now I know where it stuck.

I'll be coming to you guys for a valve body at some point if I don't go back to a six speed first.

Thanks.

DHawk, Thank you. The dealer did just what you said and the problem persists. I'm taking it back on Monday, they will tear the transmission apart and either rebuild or replace, depending. I'd like to see a new transmission, but it's up to the warranty guys. I can't complain too much, I'm getting a rental car out of it and the warranty deductible is only $100. I'll post more when a resolution is found.

i have a slightly different problem. my truck has stopped shifting into o/d & i get codes p0633 & p0700. since it stopped shifting into o/d last week it did start again only once when ironically was on the way to my local repair shop but they couldn't access the computer with their's. i'd rather not go to the dealer if i don' have to since they're butchers & i don't trust them to do it right. from what i've been reading here it seems like the temp. sensor or maybe the tps. anyone else have this problem or can offer any help?

I would bet your local shop has a snap-on scan tool because snap-on has no software to get in to the 03 trans controler.

And I own an 03 truck a snap-on scan tool and a transmission shop.

Needless to say snap-on needs to get their **** together.
