yep, you all heard correct! transmission is shot for the second time in 31,000 miles. almost a year apart! dealer says i need a new torque converter, clutches and seal kit. truck hesitates when i go from forward to reverse or park to forward or reverse. also truck shudders badly between first to second gear. i know some you guys will look at my sig and will think my mod's caused these failures. my first transmission went when she was completly stock! i've only had the ramifier since november and unplugged it last month because the engine would hiccup with it on. i dont hottrod much. maybe a quick WOT runs on the highway but never from a dead start. i only tow my boat twice a year and thats in february when we go to florida. whats the deal? i wonder if this transmission will last a whole year after they fix it???... james

Hot-rodding is a subjective thing. Sounds like you need to bite the bullet and get your transmission built the right way. I think the dealer cut some corners and did not find out what the real problem was the last time they fixed it. Better leave it to a transmission specialist.

At least then you can get a TST or Hot Juice and put some power down :D

lets see you have dtt valve body, 80hp injectors & a big huffer. then you added box for a little while  and you wonder why the stock tc did not hold up?? am I missing something? go get the transmission done right ats,dtt,suncoast,bd... .....

The TC is the weak link. If you upgrade the torque converter at the same time it gets rebuilt, you probably won't have any more issues.

Jim

You are at 150HP over stock, and are still scratching your head about what could be wrong?

Just changing the converter will help you out tremendously. Should help you out 1-2 MPG in town, and not having to rebuiild the transmission every year.

If you have to wait for lockup for the truck to really move, then your Torque converter is no longer doing it's job because it is being overpowered.

i was thinking the same thing about getting a dtt converter after the rebuild. i realize i have added horsepower but i dont drive the truck like a 18 year old kid. mostly i drive to get the best mpg. on the highway always set the cruise to 70mph. my truck has had alot of problems from day one. it was in the shop for six weeks while the dealer was chasing injector problems. thats why i put in the EDM's. i would have left them stock if the dealer could have fixed them before my trip to florida. i think JCLEARY is right. the dealer probally missed somthing the last time. i had the valve body installed 1 week after the last transmission rebuild and massdiesel said i still had a ton of clutch material in the pan. truck was completly stock then... . james

dude you growin any of that funny tabacco? hope you dont expect dodge to pay for your transmission other wise you are smoking some of that funny tabacco.

by the way thanks for growing Gods greatest gift to man!! well maybe 2nd greatest it follows caffeine very closely.

The problem MIGHT be (shot in the dark) that cruising, and light driving that your APPS % is to low to apply proper pressure to the transmission to keep the clutches from slipping...

Does your truck short shift consistently?

Merrick

please describe to me what short shifting is. my local dealer is super cool. they are footing the bill. my service manger told me that they service a truck that has the banks stuff, a piller guages and some transmission work and my truck goes way better then his. they actually told me i dont have to remove my add-ons when i bring it in for service!..... james

sounds to me like you got the dealer we all dream for :-laf and yes the converter is the weakest link in the transmission. pm me if you want prices. NADP is among the best in the industry! have fun :D

Short shifting.

That would be when the transmission shifts to the next gear, although it has not had time to accelerate in the gear it is currently in.

Merrick

for as long as i can remember when i take off from a stop, under normal accelaration, the transmission will seem to to go first, second first then slide normally into second. this all happens very quickly. i had the truck in at the dealer a few weeks ago for bad door seals and forgot to mention the problem... . james

tabacco ,

Spend the money and get a transmission built and dont blame your driving habits for its failure . My previous CTD was never raced , towed a 5000 lb trailer 3 times a year 140 mile round trip , completely stock bumper to bumper and it failed at 17 k which was around the 3 year mark due to rarely driving the truck .

The dealer did a "soft rebuild", what ever the heck that is and it failed again at 26k with the same sypthoms. The second time they stated the tc was bad and it was replaced under the extened warranty i had , glad I had it or they would have stuck it to me.

After the second time i had enough and went with a nv5600 6 spd ,which was not available when i bought my 99.

Good Luck :)

tobackygrower, its great that they are covering the trans, but the fact remains all they are going to do is build it to factory specs, which is not going to do you any good. :( Remember our saying here... . I am my own warranty station !! Get the thing built right and enjoy the goodies you installed!!

i'm going to talk to scott at massdiesel tomorrow. it looks like a torque converter will be in my near future. am i correct in thinking that if they replace the clutches a DTT torque converter with my DTT valve body my transmission should be good to go? i dont plan on hot rodding or adding any more goodies. i just want my truck to tow like it should. not struggle with the long hills and not bury the egt guage!... . james :D
