on to the next situation. Just wondering if this is normal behavior for my auto. When in town or pulling a load and I start out with the OD off, when I do turn it back on and it attempts to shift to 4th it pauses and I feel like it is between gaers fora few seconds. normal or not normal?

also sometimes when I come to a stop at a traffic light after a few seconds when I attempt to take off again I get a pause when I push the accelerator then the truck moves like the transmission is slipping for a second. Itahs only happened a few timesand I can not duplicate it when I want to,what do you fellas think?

also some times when in town running in 3rd gear locked up and I mash the pedal it sometimes kicks out of lock up. When in lock up the accelertion is awesome but when I kicks out it is just plain boring. What I am asking is it normal for 3rd gear in lock up to kick out like that, because I know with my truck that once 4th gears goes in to laock it does not kick out it just takes off

The first thing I would check is fluid level. It should be checked after the transmission has reached operating temp. Then move the shift lever thru the gears and check it in "N" while it's idling.

If that's ok, then clean and check the TPS (throttle position sensor).

Deezel,

mine does same thing when switching out of overdrive as you describe. I get none of the other symptons.

transmission stuff!

There was a discussion about this the other day so I did a little playing with it to verify, On mine if OD is out and 3rd is locked up it will take accelertion till you put it on the wood then the converter comes out and if in OD at any speed it will stay locked up... . This would kill a gas motor. In stop and go stuff if you lightly press the pedal say to 15-1700 it will shift out of first real quick but if you spool it up a bit it will hang on more before going to second. I think the big fix for these(from what I've read) is to do a valve body and converter change(I hate the stock one)

Seems normal

The delay when switching the OD on is normal. When you hit the switch, the trans will unlock the TC,then shift to OD,and then relock the convertor. It does seem like it takes a bit,but that's the way it is supposed to work.

It is kinda stupid it won't stay locked up in 3RD with your foot to the floor, mine is the same way. Same as JFulmer describes.

I too have the problem where it seems to go into neutral while stopped at a light, and will go no where if you gas it,after a few secs, and a little throttle,it will slip and shudder and go back into gear. Has done it since day one. I thought it was convertor drain back, but it will do it after a 30 min drive, when you are stopped for a long light. Only does it once and a while, and could never reproduce it for the dealer. Have changed fluid several times, adjusted bands,TPS,talked to Bill K,etc, nothing helps. Other than that the trans works great,so I won't open it up till I have a problem,or a DTT bomb goes on. I have seen this problem on a few other trucks as well.

Check your fluid level, condition, etc, just to be sure.

transmission Questions Seemingly Answered, Thanks

After a bit more reading I see that other owners have & are experiencing transmission "slip", or "lag" while the transmission is hot & the driver is leaveing a stop. So far the consensus seems to be to check the fluid for level & color & live with the problem until major problems occur... any other input?

My transmission exhibited the same lag from a stop. I ruled out it being a hot or cold only symptom. Has done it maybe 12X since new. Now has 70K miles and no more signs of it happening in the last year or so. I would not worry unless it happened often and / or was repeatable.

I've got a TST torque converter (I think, PO installed) and mine doesn't do anything, except maybe popping out of lockup in 3rd. How do you know it comes out of lockup, the transmission just feels like it slips? I don't recall that happening, and I've mashed it on the highway plenty of times to pass a truck or whatever.

What are your trucks idling at when experiencing the slip from a stop?

Could possibly be the motor is idling too slow to build pressure on clutches:confused:

I have never experienced this with my truck.
