This maybe a Dumb--- question but, i have been told that Cummins has the hardware to bolt any transmission to the 6B, so... . how painful would it be to replace my 518 with the Allison? This is a 93 with 280k+ miles.
This is mostly true. If you know the Cummins part number for the attachment plate no problem. If you don't know the part number then it's a problem. Cummins does not keep a list of part numbers of what fits what etc.
Which allison. We have several rear plates (bell housing) and starter torque converter plate that are from 6bt cummins that were in spotter trucks. They are SAE housings made for side mounts and are larger than the 518 so would pose a problem under the truck, though not an impossibility. What is the newest transmission in the Chevy/GMC line. Isn't that an Allison OD and is it more streamlined for a smaller truck application? I can sell you one of the SAE sets cheap. I can get the numbers for anything Cummins has if you are serious. The allisons are built for engine specific applications so you would have to have some other info as well.
I'd be interested in seeing what it would take for an SAE set to bolt up the newer allisons to the CTD. And any other info on the allisons would be great. I am not happy with this Blumenthal transmission.
