Does anynone know if you can remove the tailhousing from a 48re transmission (4x4) and replace it with out too much trouble? The rear flange that bolts to the transfer case is damaged and I don't think its repairable. Can I just swap the tailhousing with a good one? or does this require complete disassembly of the transmission.

BTW, its out of the vehicle.

Thanks...

The tailhousing as far as I can tell contains part of the rear shaft and the seal. Mine was removed for the gearvendors unit. There shouldnt be anything else there to be concerned with. Any transmission guys out there to give better answer...

You can remove the tailhousing with the park rod in place. You may need to move the output shaft side to side to get it to release. You may need to pry it off, too. Otherwise drop the pan, and VB and pull the park rod out, then pull the tailhousing off.

I'm going to replace the Vb anyway, so it sounds like it would be possible. Anyone have a spare tailhousing they might want to part with?

Well, a call to gearvendors revealed that the trans tailhousing is only replaced when installing a gearvendors on a 2WD. On a 4x4, the rear section of the transfer case is replaced. So much for me finding someone with a tailhousing they don't need. :(
