For now I have mine in the plug facing the rear right above the trans pan several inches. There is a plug above this one that faces toward the passenger door but the one I have it in is below this facing toward the rear of the truck. When I change trans oil I will put on the Mag Hytec pan I bought and move the sender to a port on the pan they have tapped for a sender. There are pictures on here somebody posted of it.
 
I have a sender in both the pan and output line. The one in the pan hardly moves. You could fry your transmission rocking in in the snow, parking a trailer in a tight spot and only see the fluid in the pan increase in temp a small amount. In heavy stop and go traffic, the output line will tell you when to start fast idling in neutral. If you are only going to put it in the pan or body, save your money, or buy a fuel pressure gauge instead. I tell you this after having two senders in both my 93 and my 2001. 5. On the 2001. 5 I had one in the body and one in the line, and moved the body one to the pan at first service. Not much difference in the readings. Hardly comes off the peg. I was in the same rear passenger side port. In the future I would only bother with the output line, as I very seldom switch the meter to the other sender. Sort of an "I am bored driving thing!" OK nothing going on down there, I guess I will switch it back!



Bill most likely will sell you the DC line with the steel braided hose to reach the transmission tank cooler. He did not like my compression connector sender pod and replaced my line with the DC one while doing my transmission. SNOKING

I agree, the test port on the passenger side is worthless... you could save some money by taking a circle of cardboard, drawing a gauge face on it, then draw the needle pegged at the bottom below 100*... that's all you're gonna see anyway, with the sender in that port, even as your transmission melts down. Been there, done that.
 
I Got the adapter from Autometer and mounted it in the cooler line coming out of trans. I feel it is a more accurate reading of the fluid temp at it's hottest point, not just the avg temp of the fluid sitting in the pan.
 
There are four test ports on the passenger's side. Governor, rear servo, line pressure, and front servo. The govenor test port is mounted high on the side of the trans near the rear. The other three test ports are about the same level. I use the center one which is the line test port. It reads about the same as the hot line trans sensor according to some tests I did. My truck is a '95 so the trans sensor port is used by the CPM. I didn't want to run with the sensor tricked with a resistor. Since then I have done quite a bit of towing with it in the line test port. The temp readings seem to make sense according to what I'm doing. The only time the temp gets high enough to be a concern is charging up a long steep grade. It does get hot in traffic, but not too bad. If you use one of the servo test ports you won't see much in the way of temp change.

Joe, last night I tried moving my sender to the line test port, but the thermocouple end bottomed out on something in there before the threads would even engage. Mine is a Dipricol, extends maybe a third of an inch beyond the threads. Your sender must be a lot shorter?

I believe you are right about the output line, I talked to my transmission guy today and the test ports aren't really the place for the sender. He agreed the output line to the cooler is the best. Thanks for the info

I pull a skid loader with both of my trucks and I don't know why DC doesn't put a transmission gauge in the dash as a stock item like Chev does! It seems to me if your buying a Cummins your not just haulin the ole girl to the hairdresser's and home again, of course I could be wrong, have been before! It just seems dumb to me that its not on the truck, I would like to know whats goin on when I'm pulling some of the hills around here, let alone the BAH coming up to my place!!!
