transmission temp sensor question

I'm planning on installing a transmission temp gauge in the "hot" cooling line and have a few questions.

1)Looking at where the lines connect to the transmission, is the "hot" line the one towards the front of the truck or the back?

2)Is the fitting just a 1/2" pipe thread where I can just stick a Tee in between the line fitting and the transmission?

3)When I disconnect the fitting, will ATF pour out all over?

Thanks in advance for the help. I thought I should ask before I start messing around.

Yes
Look this subject up in the archives. There are hundreds(and I mean it) of posts on this.
Personally, I bit the bullet and bought the lines from the dealership that had the port in it, and the upgraded quick release clips.
I even bought a spare one.

OK, It's starting to make sense now. As I was getting rid of the poop bottle and tightening up the hose clamps on the trans cooler lines where they go into the cooler,I noticed the front line crossed under the bell housing and went up to a cylindrical looking thing. That must be the heat exchanger. Thanks

BTW If the Bozos at the factory forgot to tighten yours, It's easier to get at the hose clamps if you remove the two nuts and one bolt that hold the cooler on and let it sort of hang there so you can move it around for access.

remember if you use the replacement line you have to remove the check valve in the heat exchanger as there will be too much restriction in fluid flow for proper cooling, after you take the line off look up in the exchange cooler and unscrew the check valve. Yes you will loose transmission fluid, don't remember how much, when you remove the valve wear an old shirt. Ron
