They are very accurate in their ability to read surface temperatures. To get a better understanding of what your transmission is going thru, I would take several readings and compare. Your first reading should be the trany oil pan, then you could shot the side of the case, say by the tune ports. Next you could shot a reading from the transmission oil line as it goes to the cooler. Thes three temps would give you an apprechiation of what is happening on the inside of your trany,
