A friend of mine recently installed a new finned aluminum auto. transmission pan. He installed a new tran. temp. gauge with it also. He is wandering what normal temp. would be. Any ideas?

If he installed the temp sensor in the pan, my pan temp normally runs 70 degrees F over the outside temp. Needs to be over 75 degrees for the gauge to move. Of course this doesn't apply if pulling the fifth wheel in city driving or pulling a grade with the torque converter unlocked. Have seen 165 in city pulling and 190 pulling a grade (TC unlocked).

Thanks Boldt's Wagon. He does pull a 30 foot fifth wheel camper, but around here there is no big hills. This will give him some guidelines anyway.

My transmission temp stays below 90 most of the time when not towing. When under a heavy pull (13K lb 5ver) for extended period, my temp will get up to 150. I have Mag-Hytek transmission pan, aux transmission cooler, and custom heavy duty radiator. I was reviewing a chart at the transmission shop the other day and it showed fluid life starts dropping at temps above 170.

There is a big difference in temp readings taken from the pan vs one taken from the line going to the oil cooler. Best place to put the sender is in the line going out of the trans to the cooler. I bought a replacement line from Dodge which had a fitting already built in. My trans temp will normally run 140 to 160 on the highway, but can get up to 250 driving uphill with a load (off road) where your speed can only be around 15 mph. Trans oil temps can get high real fast when the trans cannot get into lockup.
