Installed my temperature probe into the out-put line from the transmission to the cooler today. In doing so I got to wondering about how far the probe should stick into the line for correct sensing.

My sensor has a 3/8 NPT, but the line fitting is 1/2 NPT, thus causing the need for a reducer. By using the reducer it causes the sensor to be "held back" from penetrating the center of the fluid line itself.

Question ~ Will accurate temperature sensing be restricted by having the sensor end held back from the main flow of fluid?

Looking forward to the expert ruling on this matter, of which I am not.

Do the '97 47RE trannys have the fitting in the line or do you have to put one in? If it has one where is it at? I need to install a sender for my new gauge. TIA.

The 97 does not have a place for the temp sending unit in the line, you need to get a new line for a 95 year model, it is the out line from transmission to the exchange cooler under the turbo. Remember when you install this line you have to remove the check valve in it, the exchange cooler already has a check valve and haveing two of them in line would restrict too much oil flow.

Will that line from the '95 fit on my 01? If so where can I order one? I have the gauge all hooked up but didn't know where to install the probe. The pics that came with it are very poor so I didn't want to attemp the probe install! Thanks!!!

Dave,

Your install will work fine. If it bothers you still you can get a 1/2" x 3/8" Flush bushing. This will move your probe closer to the fluid flow. I wouldn't even bother with it though.
