My truck has 222,000 miles on it and the transmission is starting to bug me. In the morning it has a difficult time finding OVERDRIVE, to top it of my rear main seal is leaking.

Due to my Neck problems I will be unable to pull the transmission myself, so it has to go to the shop. What is my best option for a daily driver/weekend towing warrier?

1. Have localk shop rebuils and add Suncoast or similiar Torque Converter.

2. Order transmission and have local shop install.

My budget is only 2K and thats pushing it.

Thanks John

There is also a temp sensor in the circuit. If the trans temp is below a certain set point the computer will not allow upshift to OD to happen.

The OD problem sounds like just some minor problems. But if you have to pull the trans for the oil leak. I would think about droping in a better converter.

My truck has the stock converter. So I can't reccommend one to you. Some of our members have the TCI converter or the DDT converter. I'll let them speak for the product they use.

Overdrive

Yep be sure about the tps and computer. I have two automatics with OD. The 92 hasn't worked right since the first time it got wet. There are several pickups and sensors that influence the OD. The 93 works fine some of the time. Suncoast says they can make it work period.

Maybe some sunshine would do the neck good. Take a few days and let those guys fix it. And let us know if they really can. I am going to have to do something on the 93. The 92 will get a NV4500 to test against the Getag in my other 93. Most any good shop should be able to do the seal. Unless those 222k miles have been unusually hard, the transmission is good for more than that. My 92 is at 265 and except for the OD thing is still good.

There is a post on the forum about a seperate wire setup for the tps that might help. If the transmission works right part of the time, it should work right all the time if you get the ancillary stuff right.

You mention a leak. Low oil level and ingested air in the transmission will also cause that problem. In case you don't already know, read the instruction on the stick about check in neutral not park. Makes about a quart difference.

Check the connector to the sensor that sticks out of the back of the transmission on the left side like an elephant's dick. That connector takes a lot of punishment from brush and stuff going underneath and gets sloppy. I have an almost new tps in my glove box because I was so sure my problem was tps. We had a heck of a time figuring out it was that connector. By the way, I got so tired of those connectors that I had them all taken out by an auto electic guy. He says the only reason most of them are there is because it makes it easier to install the engine in Mexico. ????

Are you saying that he hard wired with out the connectors or he did away with the sensors.

There is some info on puting a switch on the shift lever. Use the later model lever. Aparently it works. I have no details. YOU control the shift. Not the computer.

The former. The last two times I was broken down it was due to those plugs/connectors, and there is no need for them. If you need to replace the fuel solenoid, for instance, you can just unscrew the nut and remove your over the bolt connection. On the speed sensor, you can just cut the wire if you have to and put back a good connection when you are finished. Those plug/connectors have two little springs on the side of the female end and they get loose and sloppy.
