Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) transmission troubles

96 1-ton dually, plate in pump, auto trans first rebuilt at 131K ($2K); 40K miles later another rebuild ($2K); now 10K more, trans starting to act up--slips when towing up hill, lockout engaged.

Rebuilder sais he was gettin me a "super duty" converter, but now I doubt that.

1. Does this engine put out enough power/torque to tear up transmissions that fast?

2. Do I need to go to v. expensive converter... like $3,000 worth?

3. Has anyone put a 6-speed Allison behind our Cummins? Mabye out of a mid range P-D truck?

He has the trans experience and Knowledge.

The Allison can be put behind a Cummins. They are all the time, but I don't think they use a OD allison. I was told 7-8 years ago that the Allison used by Chevy is the first Od one they made. Of course at that time it was just being built.

It doesn't do much good to have a "super duty" torque converter unless the valve body has been upgraded to give the higher pressures needed to hold the clutch.

I would find a new transmission shop.

In new form, the stock auto was marginal at best. You have re-built yours twice, but have done nothing to strengthen it. For what you have paid you could easily have bought a stage IV ATS and been done with it. Investing more money in that trany is a waste of time, and going back to your trany re builder is an even bigger waste of money. You need to get with a company that has experience in building a better, stronger transmission then what came stock. There are two or three good companies that advertise in the TDR, any one will be able to help you with your problems.

Check out Goerend Brothers in Iowa..... Great stuff! I too went through similar problems... used a poorly built product... spent to much time and money on it. I'm glad I did it right this time!

Check out Goerend Brothers in Iowa. I was just there last Friday and got one of their new converters. My truck is a 12 valver and all stock. The converter thaey built for me is a little tight, but I wanted it that way because I am going to up the power real soon. I just wanted to try the converter first before upping the power. Man, it sure is nice to hit the pedal hard and the truck actually pulls instead of making noise!... ... ... ... ... . Brian
