transmission Troubles

My 92 has a stock 518 transmission and I recently had a severe electrical problem that I traced to the overdrive lockout switch on the transmission. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience dealing with this. I would like to know if I will need to drop the pan to change the switch, and if it's a relative easy task? As of right now, I am running the truck without the switch connected and the only problem that I see is the transmission will not go into overdrive. Thanks in advance for any help.

518 Trans Solenoid

You will have to drop the pan and remove the filter to change the soleniod. Not too difficult, the hardest part was resetting the electrical connector into the trans case. Damn Dodge dealer serviced my trans years ago, pinched the wire under the filter, created a short, melted a fusible link near the battery and the truck shut down on the road. No more dealer work EVER , hope this helps..... Rick.

That's exactly what happened to me. Not sure what caused the short, but I was just driving home from work when the truck just quit. When I got it home I found the fusible link had been burned right off the terminal end. Spent a good day tracing all the wiring trying to find the short! Tomorrow I will drop the pan and begin working on it... Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!

518 Trans Solenoid

Dusthomps, check the soleniod wires very carefully, sounds as though there is a short to ground somewhere. If you have access to a digital multimeter, measure the resistance of the solenoid and the wiring to the solenoid(inside the trans), and the trans wiring outside , suspect the wires are pinched near the filter, or making contact at the connector on thr trans case. I purchased a new solenoid at the time , was not cheap, $150+ if I remember correctly, also was a dealer item. E-mail me if more info needed... . Rick. :
