I have a 92 with and automatic and 3. 55 rear gears. I plan on pulling a 12000 lb trailer. I am also planning on a few power upgrades. Is there anything i can do to the stock transmission or would i be farther ahead to go with a complete transmission replacement, and from who. Thanks

Depends on what you want to spend and how bullet proof you want to make it. Driven correctly and given the right care the trans is capable of lasting well into the 200,000 plus range. However, at the weight you are looking at it will definitely shorten its life and accent the shortcomings.

It is hard to justify $3k to $4k for a transmission in an older vehicle unless you intend to keep it and use it for a while. The other question you need to ask is what will it cost if it goes out in Valentine Nebraska and you have to have it towed to the nearest place that will touch it.

With power upgrades and your weight I would definitely suggest a TC and VB upgrade. That will address quite a few of the issues. The rest, unfortunately, will require a complete rebuild and you may want to consider upgrading to a newer heavier unit.

I've had a torque converter and valve body for quite a while, my trans lost a seal or the pump with 101thousand miles, I decided that I didn't want the concerns that come with lock up so I am having DTT build me a "hybrid" that's their terminology, they will use a newer transmission housing and all the upgraded parts but keep my valve body and overdrive so I don't need any electric controls for lock up or overdrive. It's not cheap but I tend to keep my vehicles a long time so it will pay for itself, having this done is about 1/2 again what a stock rebuild is but should work a whole bunch better and last much longer.
