I'm new to the TDR. I recently purchased a 2001 turbo diesel 2500 with an automatic trans and a 3. 55 diff. On my first outing pulling a 9500 lb 5th wheel uphill in drive with overdrive off, at about 50mph the transmission would rapidly upshift/downshift . The only way I could stop this cycling was to manually downshift to second, at which time the egt would zoon to 1200F. What am I doing wrong???

Sounds like a pressure issue. Call Bill K, aka the transmission guru. He has a valve body that will fix you right up. Look around via search button (upper right in small blue letters) for Bill K, or transmision, or valve body.

Hmmmm, at 50mph sounds like maybe the torque converter was locking/unlocking. I remember when I was running stock and got in the mountains, 50mph was about the speed the converter would unlock itself. Maybe you just need more power so it never slows down to 50 #ad
Hey, a bombing excuse #ad

Make sure that you are locked out of o/d. At 50mph in 3rd lockup you should be at about 2000rpm. If the transmission keeps searching for a gear I would take it to the dealer. Could be an electronic problem with the transmission.

I know on some 98. 5 and 99 trucks, TSB 18-02-99 was the fix for electronic "noise" from the TPS causing the TCC to lock/unlock. Might apply to your truck as well.

I have basically the same rig. I have not had that problem yet. go see the dealer.
