I priced out an ATS Diesel transmission wich is what I am going to go with but I am trying to find a torque converter but the one from ATS Diesel is really expensive and I was wondering where I can find one that isn't stock but is Very good! Can anyboby Help me! I do a lot of truck pulls and Hauling of Grain Wagons! Thanks!

Hey,I put one of those 5 star ATS converters in,I love it! I would bite the bullet and buy the whole package. A good converter that can handle all of our mods is going to cost around 1500. 00 Don't skimp on a converter. I had a so-called middle of the road converter from the guy who beefed up my trans and i killed it easy. If my trans that is beefed up ever goes i'm considering a ATS unit.

I just put the 5 star ATS converter in my truck and love it. You're really only talking about a few hundred more bucks more anyways on a part that is guaranteed for 150k. Putting the ATS converter on is like adding 50 HP to your engine.

"IF" you do a lot of truck pulls and heavy hauling "DON'T BE CHEAP!!!!" Buy the 5 star. And while you're at it put in AT LEAST the input shaft that ATS sells. Voice of experience here!!! I normally haul 19K# and last February while coming out of Arizona, my ATS "ATE" the input shaft. I was dead in the water PERIOD, END OF DISCUSSION!!! Thanks to some friends (one of which is a TDR member) I got all my stuff home at the cost of diesel fuel and meals. That alone was over a grand$$$. I didn't know about the input shaft until later when it went back to the trans shop. "IF" you do truck pulls they also recommend the hardened billet mid and output shafts. If ya wanna play ya gotta pay. Currently, I have close the $9K in my auto. Part of which is the upgrade from the 3 disc to the 5 star converter. They didn't offer the 5 star when I originally got my ATS auto.

Think of the torque converter as the heart of your trans. Want a cheap heart buy a cheap t/c and you'll be a candidate for a heart attack down the road somewhere (pun intended). If you break down in So Cal, I'll come and tow ya with my 5 star ATS auto.

There are several other good TC's (and transmissions out there). Goerand Brothers, DTT, Suncoast, and NADP to name a few.

Thanks guys but I just made my mind up with the ATS Auto trans and the 5 star T/C! The trans is the 47RE. I did think about making it a 5 speed manual but I figured it was to much money for me!

I had the same thoughts of going to the manual, but the 5 speeders have problems too. The loose nut (no not behind the wheel) on 5th gear. I also heard that there's no new units, just used or rebuilts (someone else's take out). I think you made a good move in going to an aftermarket trans and t/c, don't forget the t/c controller be it the commander or pilot. Also, if you tow heavy consider the billet hardened input shaft. It may save you a few thousand down the road. Too bad they didn't know about that weak spot before I got mine.

Yeah I am spending the 5,333. 00 and buying the whole kit. The transmission with the hardened out put shaft, 5 star torque converter and the comander lock up in it!

I have a Suncoast (Proloc) triple disc for the 47re and the valve body with 10,000 miles on it. If interested email me.

Mike

I just went and bought the transmission 24 months ago and man I tell ya I am glad I did it. I dinoed the truck just after I put the transmission in and I am pushing 750 ft-lbs at the rear wheels. Becarefull Durtymax's and Powerjokes! Hahahaha fun stuff. I love it!

not to hijack this thread but my local transmission guy uses the BD 5 disk converter and BD's valve body does any one have any thoughts on this is atd any better or are all the high end pcs the same?

ATS I would say is better. They are ranked number one right now! The guy I work with just put a BD Torque Converter and valve body in his truck and aready locked the transmission up after 4 months! I tell ya I wouldn't go with any other transmission!

I was going to go with the 5 star ATS converter but after talking to Goerend that all changed

i have a tiple disk unit that has a lifetime warranty... . not 150k

and the customer support is top notch, Dave is a super easy guy to talk to, he makes sure you get the right setup for the truck. I believe that you can trade for a different stall at any time for a very minimal fee also

Its like a new truck with the converter
